I need to put a whole exhaust system on my 70 chevelle 396 and im gonna go with headers and I want to have the original SS Chrome Tailpipe tips. I want a quiet sound when idleing but when you get on it I want people to know its there I also want a good beefy sound.
What do you guys suggest?
Whats a good set of cheap headers?
What is a good pipe size for the exhaust?

Stick with 2.5"
Hard to beat the $199 Flowmaster kit
Even the $15 Summit turbos sound mint with this system.
For headers,Summit sells a pair for $79 part # is SUM-G9010
I run them on my car,fit like a glove, and you can't beat the price.
Strip the "shipping" paint off of them, and repaint with some hi-temp paint.

I concur with the Flowmasters, nothing beats them for sound and they will last years too.

I went with Jegs A-Body dual exahuast system and am really happy with it! 2.5" aluminized, mandrel bent. Includes everything but the mufflers. For the price, it cant be beat.

I too opted for the flowmaster 40 series and even the wife/kids dont think they're too loud. I was just about ready to switch to the 30's, but if they are happy, I'm happy.

For headers, I went with the Dynomax ceramic coated headers (full length). No clearance problems ANYWHERE, and they fit like a glove! I was able to install them through the bottom side without any problems smile.gif . Scot

Scot I saw that you cant install them on a column shift because of clearance issues, and I also heard of ground clearance issues with full lengths. Any opinions? I know where I can get some of those ^^ for $100 bucks.

A lot of guy's on here like the 1.750 primary tube Dynomax headers. For the exhaust from the headers back, I would suggest 2.5 inch pipes with an "H" pipe through 40 series Flowmasters and 2.5 inch tail pipes. It will sound like,
"If you touch me, I will Eat Ya" graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Which is quieter 50 or 40 series?

And will those dynomax headers fit on a column shift car?

Danny,

I've heard that about column shift cars. However, I have an automatic with console, but I also have it hooked up to the column shifter so that I can used the nuetral safety switch that's on the column. With that said, I didnt have any clearance problems.

As for ground clearance, I have the Hotchkis 1" lowering springs on all four corners, and havent ran into any problems there either. I even have a pretty viscous "bump" when trying to get into the garage.

One thing that I forgot to mention was that when I first installed them, one of the header tubes touched the brake porp. valve. After looking at a bunch of 70-72's (with headers) at Chevellebration this year, I noticed that it was pretty typcially to see this if they were running the valve in the stock location.

I ended up moving the valve by using one of the other holes in the frame and now have almost a 1/2" inch clearance now.

You might not be able to tell from the pictures, but you can at least get an idea of how they look on a big block:

If you guys havent looked at my car site then Im gonna tell you that Im gonna install the engine and tranny and exhaust before I drop the body back down on the frame.

1Quik7D,
I think I might get them headers and if they dont fit I will mod the linkage to make it fit or I will sell them and search for ones that do work with column shift cars.

Still taking suggestions on exhaust, have another question tho
Wheres the best place to get an exhaust? or should I get the headers and mufflers and tips and have a shop make and exhaust for me?
Which would be the cheapest?
I think I might go for flowmaster 50 series, cause I want a relativly quiet idleing car.

The Flowtech Terminators/ Afterburners are pretty good. Quiet under normal driving but get pretty bellowy when you stomp it. Nice deep deep rumble tone. Not as loud as a flowmaster 40, kinda like a 50 as far as loudness.

Cheap too, like $40 each from summit, they're aluminized and mine came painted black, been on there for nearly 3 years and good as new.
