: Paint code delete
NWYENKO Mar 16th, 08, 10:05 PM I recently purchased a '70 paint code delete Hugger Orange SS396, bench seat 4speed.:D Any ideas on how many code delete cars may have been built and how many were orange. I have seen a couple of LS6's that were Daytona Yellow or Hugger Orange. There is another orange '70 in Seattle. Jim
kettbo Mar 16th, 08, 10:41 PM Is this Jim the Realtor?
L7870_cortez Mar 17th, 08, 12:42 AM There are 2 Hugger Orange 70 Chevelle SS 396s that I know about around Seattle. One belongs too a Deaf Gentleman from Kent or Auburn. I believe his is an Automatic. There was one I tried too Buy from Compact Car Corner in Lynnwood about 10 years ago. It was Orange with Black Bench Seat,4 Speed, No Tach and Gauges. It was a Nice Chevelle, had a Scattershild and old Yellow Lakewood Ladderbars. I think it was originally from Everett or Mukilteo. Have not seen that Car for about 10 years. Neat Cars.
Mike
PS Jim Did you Sell your Blue Duece?
NWYENKO Mar 17th, 08, 1:06 AM This car came from Texas by way of Wisc. I sold the Deuce in '06 when it became to valuable to drive and enjoy. It is now in a museum in Dallas. We bought this Chevelle to drive to all of the shows in the area. Jim(not the realtor)
DaleM Mar 17th, 08, 4:48 PM Semantics maybe but I don't think there were any paint delete cars. Special order paint, yes - paint delete, no.
Special order paint cars will be noted one of 3 ways on the trim tag depending on the plant;
1. A dash character (or characters if no vinyl top) in lieu of a paint code number.
2. No characters at all, i.e. blank paint code.
3. DuPont mixing formula for the paint color such as 926-99616 for orange.
With items 1 or 2 there's no way to know the original special color without some form of documentation. I would suspect many of the desireable Daytona Yellow and Hugger Orange special paint cars may have been another color.
While GM kept no records of standard colors (that we know of) but did have records of RPO items, it seems like there would be a numbr somewhere to be found for a total RPO ZP3 but probably not broken down by color since there literally hundreds of special paint colors to choose from.

NWYENKO did not say paint delete he said Paint code delete. That is correct since it does not have a paint code but I agree probably better to call it "special paint".
There seems to be at least 2 types of "special paint".
(1) The type where the trim tag has a dash instead of a paint code. I believe this required some type of permission from F&SO or Central Office
(2) The type where you can order "special paint" at the dealer as an extra cost option.
Example of this is the 1969 SS Chevelle where you can order Monaco Orange or Daytona Yellow as "special paint" and the trim tag still has the 72 or 76 paint code
shawnW Mar 23rd, 08, 12:31 AM I had a 70 hugger orange not ss but was a fact 400 big block car (396) buckets and console 12 bolt sweep dash ------ was on the cowl I asked the same question a couple years ago not, that many
BIGBLOCK70Z Mar 24th, 08, 1:42 PM I have always thought that stipe deletes had dashes or xx's, for a car that had hood pins and flapper, a plane ss would be blank on cowl tag. for 70 models

Stripe color was not indicated on trim tag. Only paint upper/lower and vinyl top color
DaleM Mar 24th, 08, 3:39 PM Not all plants depicted special paint the same way on their trim tags. Van Nuys tended to put the DuPont mixing code on the tag such as 926-99616, Arlington might just leave the tag blank (but add the top color in vinyl or convertible) where KC might put dash characters.

Paint delete or paint code delete, same thing - no such animal particularly since some plants do have a code for special paint and some don't. Those that are blank or use dashes don't 'delete' the paint code, they just don't display it as per that plant's SOP. Kinda like saying 64-67 plants like Baltimore or Fremont were group option delete because other plants chose to use them and they didn't for whatever reason.
BIGBLOCK70Z Mar 27th, 08, 5:06 PM Stripe color was not indicated on trim tag. Only paint upper/lower and vinyl top color I was trying to say that if it came with hood pins and cowl induction that it came with stripes too. to delete the stripes it would not have the paint code stamped in the cowl tag.
slim Mar 27th, 08, 10:03 PM I have a unrestored monaco orange LS6 that has paint code delete, just dashes

DaleM Mar 27th, 08, 11:50 PM I was trying to say that if it came with hood pins and cowl induction that it came with stripes too. to delete the stripes it would not have the paint code stamped in the cowl tag.The ZL2 option included the cowl induction hood, hood pins, and hood & deck stripes. One could choose to NOT have the stripes painted, hence 'stripe delete'. The option to have this done was not depicted on the trim tag regardless of the car's standard or special order color.
I have always thought that stipe deletes had dashes or xx's, for a car that had hood pins and flapper, a plane ss would be blank on cowl tag. for 70 modelsThe paint code for standard stripes on a ZL2 hood or optional D88 stripes is not shown on the trim tag anyway. If a ZL2 equipped car was one of the 15 basic colors offered, that color would still be on the tag. If RPO ZP3 Special Paint was ordered, the paint color code might or might not be depicted on the tag; whatever the SOP was at that factory. The only place (I'm aware of) 'stripe delete' on a ZL2 hood would be depicted is on the build sheet with a hand written notice.
The type where you can order "special paint" at the dealer as an extra cost option.
Example of this is the 1969 SS Chevelle where you can order Monaco Orange or Daytona Yellow as "special paint" and the trim tag still has the 72 or 76 paint codeI would consider the Hugger/Monaco Orange and Daytona Yellow "special paint" (with the supplied 72 and 76 paint codes) because they were only available with the SS option only and not factory offered with a non-SS car. I don't ever remember seeing this as an extra cost option on a SS-optioned car though. If a non-SS car, the colors could still be ordered through F&SO (like any other non-standard color) and there may or may not have been an extra charge.
Having something deleted from a car is a result of a concious effort to not have it installed if would normally have been AND if the factory would build it that way. An example would be the Heater Delete option in the mid 60s. Since the heater/defroster was standard equipment, one could order the car without it and receive a credit, hence 'heater delete'.
I suppose if one could get a basic 75 75 Cranberry Red 70 Chevelle, one could request that Fisher Body not put the 75 75 paint code on the tirm tag - then you'd have a 'paint code delete' tag since not putting the code on the tag would be a concious effort and not a result of a special ordered color.
BIGBLOCK70Z Mar 28th, 08, 5:47 PM OK i am really confused. no i got it. my dealer advertised a trainload of special paint cars hugger orange, citrus green, and camaro gold. my chevelle was gold code 53 but the trim tag is blank, nothing on it. i guess that it just depends on what month, day, week, and shift.
DaleM Mar 28th, 08, 6:33 PM OK i am really confused. no i got it. my dealer advertised a trainload of special paint cars hugger orange, citrus green, and camaro gold. my chevelle was gold code 53 but the trim tag is blank, nothing on it. i guess that it just depends on what month, day, week, and shift.:confused:No mystery at all. Paint code #53 was not a Chevelle paint code in 1970. Whether it was available in another Chevrolet brand, elsewhere in the GM lineup, or from Ford or MoPar, it'd still require it be painted apart from other Chevelles. Camaros and Chevelles were not built at the same plants. Formulated paint colors for Camaros (like those mentioned) wouldn't normally be available at Chevelle plants, hence the special paint requirement. :)
BIGBLOCK70Z Mar 31st, 08, 3:44 PM 70 code 53 was for camaro only as per gm. i am not sure what citrus green looks like but i think that it was a camaro color too. was hugger orange the same as manaco orange.
elcamino Mar 31st, 08, 7:12 PM Camaros and Chevelles were not built at the same plants.
They were at only 1 plant, Los Angeles, CA.
BIGBLOCK70Z Apr 1st, 08, 12:58 AM i think that arlington was A bodys only
elcamino Apr 1st, 08, 9:34 AM Arlington built the Chevelle, Impala and the pu trucks starting in 1971. Today they built the SUV's, 'burban, Yukon.
Arlington is/was a GMAD plant, so they built other GM lines also.

I have some original Yenko sales paperwork that shows he charged $33 extra for Monaco Orange and Daytona Yellow Yenko Chevelles
was hugger orange the same as manaco orange.
