Looks like alot of you folks were busy pulling wrenches today. I messed around with some fiberglass and made some good headway on molding in my hood scoop. Pretty happy with how it's turning out. Even got both my sons to help with the initial fitting. :)

Still more to do, but all I can do for now is sit and watch the resin dry.

Here's a bogus little slideshow I made with photobucket just for fun. http://s176.photobucket.com/albums/w167/Out66Cast/?action=view&current=883ce90e.pbw

Nice work John! Looks like you have everything under control. Keep us updated with pics of the progress. After filling/smoothing the top, I still recommend you lay a light layer of glass from the hood to the scoop to cover all the filler. That should keep it from cracking. A little finishing filler and it will look like a single piece.

Just a little update.

A good bodyshop friend of mine referred me to micro fibres for the top side of the scoop. Mix it in with resin and catalyst until it is of a peanut butter consistency. Then smooth it in with a popsicle stick or tongue depresser.

It's setting up right now in my garage really nice and slow like. The slower the kick, the less likely to crack.

Brett, once this is totally cured, I will run a 4" strip down the scoop and glass it in. Then cover it with more micro fibre when it sets.

This is the way to go with this fiberglassing routine.

This is the microfiber stuff...really powdery

Yea that micro fiber is like very fine chopped fiberglass. Dont get it in your arms! We called it milled fiber mix where I worked and it was great for putting places where you didnt want it to run and could create nice structural fillets. The resin is much more likely to not crack with that in it.

John, I am not so sure you should put the microfibre over the glass afterwards. That stuff is pretty hard to sand. Like I said earlier, I would fill in what you have now with filler so it looks nice, then use fine glass over that. Dont use the heavy mat that you used on the bottom. Then all that will be required is some light finishing filler. Just my opinion of course. :beers:

What are your plans for painting it? Going to leave it primer? I would at least paint the inside all flat black and then get the outside the same primer color.

PS: Resin doesnt "dry", it cures.. Guys I used to work with branded this in me as it is one of their largest pet peeves. ;)

Point taken on the finishing tips. I still need to build it up a bit from the natural centerline on the hood to meet up with the rising centerline on the scoop. So probably one more small application of the microfibre tonight. Then lightly glass and fill.

As far as paint goes, my intent is to go satin black under the hood, and maybe a skull and crossbones on the inside of the scoop a la DeathProof :D

If I can get much of the remaining bodywork accomplished on the rest of the car, I'll splash the whole thing epoxy primer, then $$$ permitting, I have a friend who will finish the bodywork and paint it out for me. Color choice at this time is silver with black '70 SS stripes. This should just about complete the total bastardization of this '68. ;)

Thanks to all of you with your words of encouragement.

Brettd85
Mar 19th, 08, 4:21 PM
While looking at my pics you can tell I am a fan of SS stripes on 68/69. However, because of your hood design, can I suggest you do something else to accent the baldwin motion feel of it? Perhaps something more Yenko, Mopar shaker style, or Baldwin like to keep the flavors all the same. Just wanted you to think it through..

PS: Are you still planning on installing the section you cut out to separate the filter from the hot engine bay? Dont forget to add in some bracing on the rear which you removed for the scoop.

Dave
Mar 19th, 08, 4:47 PM
I'd have to think twice about the SS stripe's with the L-88 Hood. Maybe the BW thing, or a wide flat black stripe like the older Vette's.

While I see your point, there is nothing wrong with asking someone elses opinion. We arent telling him what to do and in the end he will do what makes him happy. People dont always know everything that is out there and I have been saved from making alot of mistakes by simply asking opinions. Besides, alot of people have bad taste.

Kevin, if you put something I think is stupid on your car, I will criticize you. ;) :D

Laid some glass on the top side of the scoop, and it hit really nice. It's feeling very solid. Just need to do a little sanding and filling, and it should be paint ready. Then I'll do a bit of re-inforcing on the under side. Then figure out how to mount those dzus fasteners and make it all real clean.

Did get all my bumper brackets wire wheeled and painted. Now we're ready to hang the new glass bumpers. Slowly starting to look like a car again.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Brian, I hope to make it down mid June or early July for another Test and Tune weekend at Bremerton. After a few shakedown runs up here at our little shorty track, it'll probably be ready enough for the long run.

As far as ET goes, I am very curious myself. I want to put some miles on the engine....and the driver, before I spray this thing with 100 or 125 shot.

Maybe you guys could give me a ballpark idea of what it should run. Here's a few details :

454 040 over 2bolt with 781 heads and 12 cc domed pistons...all balanced
Lunati 60203 hyd flat tappet cam, new springs, pushrods
Performer intake, Holley 750 vac sec carb
1 7/8 primary headers...marginal exhaust
turbo 400 w/ street and strip internals, 2400 stall convertor
and will have 4.10 12 bolt with 27" ??? slicks

Body lightened considerably...glass front end, no inner fenders, no interior, no wipers, heater, radio, fiberglass bumpers...but added weight for 10 pt cage.

up to a 125 shot for later.

Any guesses with and without the laughing gas ?

For sure mid 12s without issue NA

Cut it out for a T-ram but was smart enough to keep the piece in case he went a different route. Couldn't believe he still had the cut out piece when I ran into him a while back. Got a little sidetracked with the rear project. Am hoping to have my axle tubes welded up this weekend, get it in the car and get back on the bodywork.

I'm resigning myself to the fact that time is ticking fast, and maybe I should quit trying to make this car street legal-ish at first, and just get it banged together and ready for the track for this year, and work on the street legal stuff later in the fall.

Just get a few fun laps in it for now...before I run out of time for this season...:D
