Any input appreciated... six different colums were available during the 1970 model year, all were painted 30 degree gloss-black regardless of interior color! True or False

False ............:D

OK... The Malibu Steering Column and Wheel can be color coded to match the interior.

The SS Column and Wheel were Black however, regardless of interior Color.

Can't help the the amount of variables on the Columns but will guess.

Tilt column shift
non tilt column shift
Tilt 4 speed
non tilt 4 speed
tilt Auto console
non tilt auto console

And color variables of each for malibu applications?

What's the difference between the 4 speed and auto console columns?

someone will chime in that really knows...I think the the actuator arm at the base that moves with the reverse gear lock out is shorter on the 4spd w/ slightly different bend....and the automatic has a large chrome arm sticking out of the right side........hehehe.......sorry couldn't resist....;)

You forgot about 3 speed on the column and I don't think you could get tilt with that one so that means 7 flavors of 1970 steering columns.

You are correct. I have some photos of the differences that I'll try to dig out...

I don't have a pic handy but the 4 speed column has the short arm sticking out...only about 1 1/2 inches long. The automatic columns have a 4 inch or so arm with a slight bend in them. I actually used a automatic column shift tilt column from a Buick Skylark and a floor shift auto column from a 77 Camaro and built a column. I ended up shortening the shift arm and it works perfect with my reverse lock out and Hurst shifter.

Here's a photo of a 4 speed steering column. I can't find the photo I have of an auto...

I don't think that there was a 3-speed manual transmission column shift column in 1970. None of my shop manuals or service liturature describe that column. (There were descriptions on how to service the 1967-68 columns with three on the tree.)

Also, if there were still Powerglide as well as Turbohydro automatic transmissions; they each would have their own column shift columns. The Powerglide would have a shift plate in the column for P, N, D, and L positions. The Turbohydro requires a shift plate with an extra position for P, N, D, L2, & L1.

I can't believe there wasn't unless they discontinued it for 2 years. A friend of mine has a car that was originally a 307 3 speed on the column. It is a 1972. Maybe it was unavailable for a 2 years?? I thought I saw a 70 3 on the tree somewhere though.

An automatic console column has a large chrome arm sticking out of the right side.?

I believe it's supposed to be 60% gloss and not 30%

Guys,
I'm getting my info from a Motorbooks - Chevelle restoration guide written by Paul. A Heard. Is he corect?
Here is another question... he goes on to say that you can use a speedometer with a shift widow correctly on an ss car with a floor shifted transmission. In some cases they blocked out the shift window with tape... ?

I'm pretty sure you don't want to do that.

I have another question about a steering column the guy claims to be from a 70..
Did any columns come with that lever you have to push in order to turn the key all the way back? Usually found on standard transmission cars.. If they didnt come on a 70, when did they start putting these on columns?

No not from a 70...I seem to remember a Monza I had was equipped with that. It was a 79 so I would say that column is 79-81 before they moved the dimmer switch from the floor to the column.

Three speed column shift was available in '70. I had one and there is one in Ottawa in a wagon that I have seen also. Also had a '70 with a powerglide trans.
