I can get a pretty good deal on a Pro Products 8" Balancer for my 454, Its the last thing I need before I can get my rotating assembly balanced. Anything special to shop for with balancers?

Whats the difference between and internal and external balanced. In performance that is.

Would the #80004 Work well on a 454. It says 396/427
They have a #80005 that says 454/502. I know alot of big block stuff is the same but they seem to list different PN#'s for these. I was looking at the 80004 , lot better than I had before and its a good price, and we stock it at my work...

Phil,

If the engine is a Mark IV, I believe you will want to stay with the external balanced balancer. If you try to switch it over to an internally balanced engine, you will be adding a good deal of machine work. The metal slugs they use to balance an engine, have a stiff price on them. If you plan on staying below 5 or 6K, the stock may work fine. If you plan on taking up the rpm scale, I would strongly suggest you go with an aftermarket one. The Fluid Damper by GM is considered by many to be quite good. There are a ton of them, and most of them will do the job real well.

Fred.

Balancers are a little strange, I never understood exactly what they do. Is Mark and GEN the same thing? This is an 89' block, so internal or external? I may just run a stock one, I just want something that wont break the bank. The one I mentioned above would be a no go?

Phil,
A 454 is an externally balanced motor. Unless you spend huge bucks to have it internally balanced it will be an externally balanced motor. Therefore, you need an external balancer. That being you need part #80005

I've run a stock balancer on mine for all these years, hardly ever sees the high side of 6000 rpm. Its 30 years old though and as many passes that I have made,I consider myself lucky that it stayed together. I'd spring for a new balancer, externally balanced.

question here? if his 454 has a rear 1 peace main seal, it would need an unbalanced harmonic balancer, and unbalanced flywheel right? if your 454 has a 2 peace rearmain seal, then harmonic balancer, and flywheel needs to be balanced. unless you are going to build a drag racing ride. most big block cheveys have a very strong power band below 6000 rpm, if you gonna turn that thang above that you need balanced everthing. and dont get the cheap, and DO NOT GET A CHEAP FLYWHEEL for over 6000 rpm. it will break apart and KILL YOU ! am i correct on this ?

All factory 454's are externally balanced, and a SFI approved flywheel or flexplate is a good thing graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I ran a pro-products balancer.. it wound up breaking, the outer hub spun on the inner hub.

I now run a ATI super damper. Dont skimp, youll pay for it twice. However, if your not going to go to 6000+ A stock type damper will work fine.

Well this thing will see mostly fun street driving, daily driver. Im not sure what my combo will make. Im guessing around the market of 5500, or right under 6k. Now you got me scared on the flexplate smile.gif Death isnt a good thing hrm. Well I'll get an external balanced then, this is good to know! IT sucks having to order like more than half the parts, dont you wish there was a magical little store that had everything we need... or I guess we could live in the same town as summit. I think Im going to order the 80005, or something stock from kragen, OR someone from my work suggested Part Number 90005, its the last one on the page, About $110 out the door... still kinda pricey but this thing looks meeeean.

Pioneer makes a good "stock" balancer thats in your price range. You can get it at any of the parts houses.
The Pioneer is 50 times better than the pro products brand....but if you insist on a Pro Products....keep an eye on it. when mine came apart it went towards the engine...but it could of went the other way.
