I was wondering if anyone makes a .02 head gasket for the BBC. DO these shims seal well when both surfaces are prep'd? Any tricks to get them to seal?

Mr Gasket has .020 shim gaskets. 1131 is part number. Better move fast, looks like it was discontinued. It's not on the Mr. Gasket site anymore. (Summit is backordered, I just now ordered two pair from Jegs, P/N 720-1131 = $48.97 including s/h) Thanks for bringing this up-I wouldn't have known they were discontinued if you hadn't posted.)

Yes, you need flat surfaces.

You can't use them on lightweight castings. That's more of a small block problem though.

Some folks use Copper Coat, some use aluminum spray paint, some use teflon paste pipe thread sealer. Whatever works for you.

I have never had a shim gasket work well on any BB that had a lot of compression and was run hard. If you are trying to get the deck right on a street type motor it might work but everything must be straight.

Probably the best steel head gasket comes from GM. Get the orginal .022 steel head gaskets for about 25.00 / set.

I've used GM and Mr Gasket steel shims for years and never had one leak or blow. Only use them on iron headed stuff.

BTW...they were used often with 2 stages of N20 also!

i as well have used them for many years even with nitrous and over 13 to 1 compression......and they are on my current bbc in my z28....the mr gasket set that i buy all measure right at .018" after they come out of the motor......i use copper spray coat on them and spray very well both sides.......i get them from the local parts house and run 22 bucks with tax included......they are cheap and they work great to get that little more compression.......

I also have used the steel shim gaskets on BBC's with no problem, I have coated them with spray on copper coat first, then let it set up before putting them on the engine. I have 17,000 miles on the last one I did, no problems to speak of.

Didn't the crate LS7 come with steel shim head gaskets, way back when?? I think the LS6 may have also??

They all came with .022 steel head gaskets. That's why the comp ht of stock pistons puts the piston down in the hole .020 - .025. This was a problem years ago. I can remember rebuilding a motor and they would only cut the block about .005, just enough to clean up the surface, hardly worth the setup. Today on a rebuild, we cut the block .020 and control the piston/head with the gasket.
