: Midnight Special L78 pics from '70s
ToyzRMe Mar 13th, 08, 3:32 AM I know how much y'all like pics. :D
These are some pics of the '66 L78 that I bought from my deceased friend's sister last November. This car was discussed as a barn find back in December. This is the car that we pulled out of the storage box after being stored for 28 years.
These pics were taken in the mid-'70s, while waxing it on a nice sunny Sunday in the summer.
It's amazing, but it's current state after all those years isn't much different. I have the hood in the pics, and the scooped hood that's on it now. This is pretty much the look I'll be shooting for when we start cleaning it up this fall.
She sent me about a dozen pics that she found while going through some of his stuff.
Much happier times. Enjoy!
Randy

And have the vintage photo's blown up for display.
How Cool would that be? Crowd stopper!
Your not going to restore that just yet are you?
It's such an unmolested day 2 survivor that you ought to run it as close to "as found" as possible for a few years and get some Magazine exposure.
Wicked Cool.
davoaz Mar 13th, 08, 1:54 PM Whats Jesus putting in the trunk? Could be something valuable.

Brian, the pics I posted at the beginning of this thread are from circa 1974-1975. The pics on the barn find thread from December are current ones.
The car is still at my friend's shop in PA waiting for me to get the time to go up and haul it back to TX.
It pretty much looks the same today as it did in the pics from the '70s. It just needs cleaning from sitting around in the storage box.:)

73guna Mar 14th, 08, 6:13 PM Very nice, Randy.

Is that your friend in the last pic?
Tom Mobley Mar 14th, 08, 6:52 PM Nicest Chevelle 4 wheel drive conversion I've seen!! :)
j/k, put the gun down.....
savage71chevelless Mar 14th, 08, 7:10 PM I love it, I was probably 3 when those pictures were taken :) I love vintage pictures of Chevelles to see how they really were back in the day. I love that car of yours, and loved the pictures when you took it out of storage. Glad to see there are still barn finds like that around. How much simpler those times must have been. I was definitely born about 20-25 years to late. Oh well
69 Daytona Yellow 3 Speed Mar 14th, 08, 8:27 PM Keep it old school or no school.....I love those N-50s out back ! ! !
chevelledude71 Mar 14th, 08, 8:29 PM Those pix are impressive, just like the car and the story. Thanks.

The big, furry guy standing by the trunk is my friend, Joe. He was a truly good guy who just loved to laugh and have a good time. Never hurt a fly, even though he got HUGE from constantly lifting and benching massive amounts of weight. He really thought constant exercise would be the key to getting past his heart problems. He needed a heart transplant, but thought he could avoid the surgery by exercising.
He'll be missed by all of us locals.
The car will be cleaned up and the SS hood in these pics will be put back on. The sidepipes are still up in the air. The interior will be redone, and so will the chassis and undercarriage. Hopefully, it'll end up pretty close to how it appears in these pics.

smittyocat Mar 15th, 08, 12:23 AM Great pics love the look. keep it as is its a rolling time capsule
kfriel Mar 15th, 08, 2:28 AM I know people joke about side pipes but I think they look great. I also like the high stance which makes the side pipes possible.
65cayne Mar 25th, 08, 5:13 PM Yes...judging by the vintage pics....every thing about that car "works" as far as looks go. The best glimpse into 70's "day 2" I have seen in quite a while.
I think it looks bad a$$ !
SethT Mar 25th, 08, 10:33 PM Thanks for sharing these! My favorite barn find story.
1968Chevelle300Deluxe Apr 12th, 08, 9:35 PM what kind of side pipes are those i want a pair for my 68 they would look cool i like the side pipes with the twisted pipe look in the front of the side pipes
cuisinartvette Apr 12th, 08, 9:50 PM That rear pic is part of what made me fall in love with musclecars as a kid. Big meats, traction bars and white shocks showing, they just looked super mean.
Leave it, just clean her up a little. Patina is cool .:beers:
HerrKooled Apr 12th, 08, 10:02 PM haha, i love the jesus pic.
Brettd85 Apr 13th, 08, 3:58 PM Awesome pics! Were the front control arms and the rear painted silver or something?

Those are Hooker Header sidepipes. The "twisted pipe look" is for real. They're actually a full chrome set of long tube 2 1/8" headers that exit the car and merge into the collector/sidepipe. VERY loud, and they absolutely KILLED the bottom end power of that 396-375. It'd have run a whole lot faster with a small set of headers and a good exhaust system behind them.
But, they looked cool at the time, and that's all that mattered to the owner.:)
haha, i love the jesus pic.
He's the previous owner. He's gone now. He looked almost like that when he passed, only much more muscled up and a whole lot grayer.;)
Awesome pics! Were the front control arms and the rear painted silver or something?
Most of the undercarriage is painted gold and silver. Frame, too. He loved that Black/Gold/Chrome scheme.;)
It's gonna be he** trying to get all that off.:D
Randy
thunderstruck507 Apr 14th, 08, 5:49 PM if you lose the sidepipes the stance will look like poop
leave it alone IMO
