: WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY SMALL BLOCK
Robert G Feb 22nd, 04, 11:42 AM I came across a 4 bolt main 350 101 cast# block
i have the rods and crank , its sitting in my shop and i feel like bringing it to life but i don't want to go broke doing it ,I'm a big block guy all my othere motors have been bb, but i feel like trying my hand at sb. so what do think would be a nice set up for this project :D
Motor Martyr Feb 22nd, 04, 1:42 PM a car to put it in ;)
tony r Feb 22nd, 04, 4:05 PM hey robert, what kind of power u wanting out of it?? stock , mild or wild???
Robert G Feb 22nd, 04, 5:10 PM Well i would like to make some nice power from it but i don't want to get into high price custom parts , I thinking 10-1 cr max most likly be using vortec heads(good deal for the pice)
as far as A CAR TO PUT IT IN TO. i would test it in my 70 chevelle , ;)
tony r Feb 23rd, 04, 9:10 AM hey robert, just remember all the perfomance and power is in the heads and cam!! i like the magnum 280 cam or a comp cam (or even a rv or towing cam slightly more radical than stock) with 10-1 comp. a decent set of heads(vortec) should have decent power and still maintain somewhat sane fuel milage a good intake (powerplus) airgap for 125$ and a decent holley and u should be good to go!!! good luck and let me know how it turns out graemlins/hurray.gif
tony r Feb 23rd, 04, 9:11 AM Hey Robert where u at in Illinois??

ddeennis Feb 24th, 04, 12:19 AM hey robert i was thinking along the same track as you.......i'm a bbc guy and build mostly those.........i have two other motors lined up for friends to get built in the few months but i came across a freebe 400 sbc and thought i would try some low down buck approach and see what the end result was........lol
and what i mean by low buck is using the the slightly dish pistons for the 400 (reuse them just hone the block)..........throw the bottom end together.....and taking a set of 305 heads i got and port the crap out of them.....get my compression stupidly high as i can....run some stupily large solid cam (260 @.050 range) and throw a single plane on top with a 850 dp with about a 4500 stall with a 175hp shot of nitrous and see what happens......this would go against all normal thinking since the heads would be "the worst part" and the bottom end would be stock and unbalanced, just do this for pure fun of it and see how it would run and see if it blows up..........i dont plan on spending more then 400 to 500 bucks to complete the motor.
lol.........it would be one of those motors you can take to the track and laugh about and just have a good time........and not care what happens to it........
it has been some years since i did one of these motors like this........the last one was a 305 i had it was all stock with alot of miles on it ........i put a 305 comp cam in it........changed the springs on the heads to the z28 style........it had about 8.2 to 1 comp. i put a victor jr intake on it with a 850 holley double pumper backed it with a 4500 stall and 4.56 gears.....it ran 13.6 thru the 1/4 mile in a 81 malibu station wagon.......lol that was fun to do...........engine never blew........ran that sucker to 7000 rpms.........
tony r Feb 24th, 04, 1:55 AM thats cool robert i live about 40 minutes west of u!! let me know what u end up doin with it the 350! and do u ever go to the route 66 drag strip?? iusually hit it 2-3 times a year!!! especially the super chevy show!!! graemlins/hurray.gif graemlins/hurray.gif
