Hey all:

I just took my 66 SS out for the first time since December. It has a 396 with an M21 4 speed and a Hurst shifter. I just bought the car in June and it has never felt completely right going into reverse. When I took it out today after sitting for three months, I had no reverse gear at all. No grinding, no nothing. It just does not engage at all. I am new to the muscle car world and was looking for some opinions, advice, possible diagnosis. Based on this limited info, do you think I am likely looking at a rebuild? Any help is greatly appreciated.

If it had reverse before, and does not have reverse now, and you haven't done anything to it, then about the ONLY thing it can be is the linkage going to the reverse shifter shaft on the tranny tail housing has come loose------------------or, fallen off. If that is the problem, no big deal, just put it back together (or get someone who knows 4spds to do it).

That is exactly what it feels like. Unfortunately I was unable to get underneath the car last night. Thanks for the feedback. I will be working on it with an experienced mechanic this weekend so I don't screw it up. Thanks again.
