Alright after reading old posts on this topic, I think I know what is wrong, but I would like some opinions. I just got my 69 running. It has a 454 with a b/g 750, I believe a comp 282h cam, rpm air gap, hooker headers, stock heads and it is fouling the plugs. I got the motor from an 88 truck and swapped the heads, cam, and intake out. I left the stock mech. fuel pump on and capped off the return line. Someone told me they had done that and didn't have any problems. After reading I'm wondering if that is my problem. The engine fired right up and I ran it for a total of 30 min. (I had a used cam) and I fired it again last night and she ran for 30 sec and died and wouldn't start. I pulled a plug and it was black. I had noticed it was idling rough and it seemed like it was missing right before I shut it off last time. So do I need to readjust my carb, get a regulator, get as return line, or a different fuel pump, or all of the above?

thanks

clean the plugs then put them back in and start it with a vacuum gauge hooked up and take a note where it is at
And then put in the right power valve yours might be too large of a number , and opening at idle..... make sure needle and seats are sealing up also

Where is the timing set. To retarded and you may have the throttle open too far to acheive a nice clean idle.

Timing is set at 16 degrees initial. One thing I forgot to mention is that the carb did sit on a shelf for about a year. Do you think it dried out? I also pulled 6 of the 8 plugs and wire brushed them and the car still wouldn't start. I guess I'll have to pull the other two...I didn't have much time and they were hard to reach. I work on it again tomorrow and I'll see about coming up with a vacuum gauge.

thanks
