: My car might not be ready for March 21st
Kevin R Mar 11th, 08, 8:48 PM  So here is the story this time. I know its all drama with me and my freakin car:mad:
First off if you remember when I first got my car I dropped #8 exhaust valve and bent it. I had a new valve installed and the intake checked. Im thinking now that the exhaust valve guide was compromised at that time but is now giving me problems. Did not notice anything when I took everything apart to port my heads.
My rad and cooling system has been under alot of pressure. I have had coolant coming out of the overflow res tank. While on a run to Darryls on Sunday we went for a ride and the AFR was all over the place. Not consistent at all and seemed to be pinging at 6200. When I dropped Darryl off he noticed that the overflow tank was bubbling. So on my drive home the AFR goes real rich and starts to loose power and almost dies on HWY 9. I get it home and start searching the site. I came across a post about fuel smell in the overflow tank so I go out and yep it smells like fuel. Now Im worried. I took out the plugs and headers and notice #8 exhaust is not black like all the others. I stick my finger in there and its sticky and smells sweet. So I taped a air hose to the intake and put pressure to the system and I found that #8 exhaust guide is where the leak is.
So I have one question. Would coolant leak into the exhaust or would the pressure of the exhaust pressurize the cooling system or would both happen?? It looks like I need to take the passenger side head off and have the #8 exhaust valve guide replaced:sad:
Im not sure if I can get it all done by the 21st. I will start the disassembly tonight and see what I can do.
Hey Darryl I hate to ask but can you help me out with another valve guide??
Please:) Thanks bud.
FourEightyNine Mar 11th, 08, 9:11 PM First off this is terrible news to hear for yah Kevin, and so close to the race season

we can do another one
gotago Mar 11th, 08, 10:39 PM Man, that sucks:( Hope it all comes together for you.
Kevin R Mar 11th, 08, 10:55 PM Thanks guys. Ya this sucks. I got the motor taken apart and its not just one but 3 on one head and #8 being the worst and three on the other. What can we do Darryl. Even the one you replaced already is leaking. I guess it makes it hard to tune a motor that is buring rad fluid.
As for the 427 I need to save money for pistons, cam, lifters, bearings, oil pump, timing chain and alot of BEER for Darryl:beers:
Remember my pretty motor well this is what it looks like right now. I got it tore down in 1 1/2 hours. Yep Im getting good at this.:noway:

OutCast Mar 11th, 08, 11:01 PM It's still a pretty motor, Kevin...just in kind of a minimalist way.
You've got 10 days to get 'er ready. From what I've seen of your handiwork so far, I'd say that gives you about 4 or 5 days to spare.
We're all pulling for you.
Go Dog Go !

Thanks for the pep talk but I dont think it will be done. Darryl has alot on his plate himself to get ready for the 21st and dont want to throw this at him now. I will be working 10 hour days next week so I can get Friday off so i really wont have alot of time myself to get it back together and tune it for the track. I will have plenty of time this year to thrash the 66:thumbsup:
gotago Mar 11th, 08, 11:25 PM Hurry up and go to the Summit website and have a new set of heads overnighted to you, that will fix the problem in plenty of time:thumbsup:
FRYNTYR Mar 11th, 08, 11:37 PM I have some rebuilt 049's sitting there. To bad it would drop your compression as you could slap those on there for now while we fix your closed chamber heads.

Yeah, and you could leave them on until after the 18th of April;)
66SSFan Mar 12th, 08, 12:04 AM Could this be caused by the over heating issue a couple weeks ago? Just seems odd to have this problem come up again. Time for a pair of AFR 305's!

Yes Mike Im sure thats what happened. Ya it sucks because the throttle stuck and it must of overloaded something in the electrical system and blew the fuse for the electric fans and overheated. I didnt notice it until I got home and the temp guage was pegged:noway: I was too busy listening to the motor for any sounds from the HIGH RPM RUN I was just on. I will not put anymore money into this 396. So I will run what I have for this year. Im saving for the next build:yes: I have a good set of 781s for that build. If I was planning on 600+HP I would go with some AFRs but Im only shooting for 500HP so the 781s will do just fine. I just want enough to get me maybe 11.50 1/4
FRYNTYR Mar 12th, 08, 9:23 PM how long does it take to put it back together?
Kevin R Mar 12th, 08, 10:19 PM how long does it take to put it back together?
A few hours
FourEightyNine Mar 13th, 08, 12:44 AM Who told yah 781s couldnt go 600+hp?
I am running large ovals, just a closed chamber version, I will show yah its possible later when the new motor goes together.
FRYNTYR Mar 13th, 08, 1:34 AM A few hours
Hmmmmm, thinking hard.
flink69SS Mar 13th, 08, 12:02 PM Well the axle snapper won't be making an appearance to this one...
I have been battling my rear end for days and I still need to get the top of my motor and back together.
Maybe next race...
FourEightyNine Mar 13th, 08, 12:16 PM The next race is 3 weeks after so you guys should have plenty of time to get your velles back up and running again.
I almost had to call the TNT off also yesterday when I was installing my anti-roll bar, one of the mounts didnt sit flush against my rearend. Luckly the company was open late yesterday and I ended up doing a little modification to the bracket and got it all together. No more wheelies for BrIan:sad:

Since I put the Jegsters on, I can't use my PST rear sway bar, I'll have to go back to stock. I'm real curious as to what kind of difference it will make.
FRYNTYR Mar 13th, 08, 1:01 PM There is a cure for all these ailments your cars are having,,,,,,,,nitrous!
Your cars are speaking out for a reason and you need to recognize what your car is telling you. Ben's car, for instance, was hinting for a safe 125 shot,,,,, Kevin's was saying,,,,"250 shot and blow me up so my 427 brotha can go in!"
What a great 396 that there engine is, taking one for the team to make room for more violent burnouts. A moment of silence please!,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ok, now go out and frigg'n burn some rubber off those tires and make us proud!!!!!!!!

66 Buick Special Mar 13th, 08, 2:41 PM Darryl?
Do you have stock in any particular nitrous company?:D
Or are you in even deeper.. the nitrous gas suppliers?
Or is it simply... the tire smoke.

Darryl you are a bad influence on me:noway:
Keep it up:yes::hurray: Ya 427 brotha is getting tired of sitting on the floor of the garage and wants to show little bro how its done.
Just need more money for parts.

I am pretty confident that the antiroll bar will make a huge difference in launching and driving around. After I got the rollbar put on going around corners felt like I was about to tip over. That should be all gone now.
I am not expecting any gains in E.T./60ft just alot better launches. I have pictures and video from before and I havent made any power improvements so it should be a good test. Not alot of variables.
No more wheelies I think....just gotta add more power. The N/A variety:D
