I dont care how "correct" the front springs are for this car I want to use lowering springs and get it down a fair amount. I will have a bigblock in this car but I am thinking of just using smallblock lowering springs, I am afraid the big block lovering springs will be too high, will this be ok?

I put just the stock BB springs in my '72 when I put the 502 in & thought it was too low for my header clearance. The stance looked good. My car is probably heavier too. Factory air etc. Ended up putting in a couple of coil spacers up front to get it up a bit. Another option is to cut the coil down. Always easier to get it down than up. Check my pics on the stance. I changing over to Air Ride as we speak. Good luck. dave

Dave,

Do you perhaps have the part number of your new front end springs you just put in, I just placed a long post yesterday ( here under brakes & suspension ) looking for a recommendation for front springs for my 71. Would you have bottomed out your headers if you had not put in your spacers?

I have the twist in spacers between the front coils and I am still not happy with the stance of the car.

Moog & TRW seem to share the same part number scheme and I outlined the different spring loads and load heights in yesterdays' post even though the column's don't line very well.

From my post yesterday it appears that either the Chevelle with A/C springs ( CS-5374 ) or the El Camino springs with A/C ( CS-5400 ) are my two choices. The El Camino springs are rated about two hundred lbs more which may be the ones I am after.

I can't tell from your photos but is the top crest of your front wheel well OVER the top of the tire? A closer picture straight on to the front wheel well would be great!

I love to give home made gifts, which one of the kids would you like?

I have a 72 ElCamino that was a 350 and the former owner had put in new springs and all was good. I upgraded to 454 and now it is too low, I just ordered new springs for it. If you can sit tight for a week or two I could sell you this pair.
Email me davehopkins@windermere.com I can email you pic of the car with the 350

Thanks for the offer on your springs Dave but the parts house that sold me the wrong springs in the first place is going to foot the bill on replacing and installing the springs and a new set of hooker jet coated super comps that were damaged.

At this point I am looking for nothing more than a recommendation on front springs by part number as I detailed in my yesterdays post.

Hey Jim. Its been 11 years since I put the springs in, but do remember they were BB non A/C springs, even though I had A/C, I was calculating weight loss with having aluminum heads, intake & radiator. Still the car weighs in without driver @ 4,050. I ordered the springs at either The Paddock or NPD. Running Super Comps with 2" pri. the pass. side was the problem. About 3 1/2" clearance. I put 2 twist in spacers in each front coil & gave me another inch. The front is a little higher than the back, but without the spacers, the front was even with the back. Haven't hit since. I'll e-mail this post to you along with some pics. Dave
