: cowi induction air cleaner housing?
72 468/400chevelle Mar 11th, 08, 9:40 AM How rare is the air cleaner housing for cowl induction on a 72 LS5? I have the original assembly and I'm contemplating fabricating flanges on both sides to accept ducts for a
cold air package. I want to use this in conjunction with my hood seal. I want to be able to pull air from the cowl as well as the bumper scoops. Is there any other housing that the flange for the hood will fit into so I won't have to ruin what I have? Anybody?

cuisinartvette Mar 11th, 08, 9:43 AM Id get a repop, modify it and put the original aside. :beers:

I agree. No way would I ruin an original 71/72 cowl air cleaner, they are too hard to find.

figbash Mar 11th, 08, 1:23 PM There's an OEM cowl induction air cleaner on Craig's List right now for $200. That should tell you something about how many are out there.

Tim_D May 7th, 08, 2:46 PM How about using a dual snorkel air cleaner base from an early 70's Camaro? The diameter is the same as the Chevelle cowl base, so you can use the Chevelle cowl flange and seal. Then fabricate ducting to the dual snorkels. It would be some work, but it would give you the function you're looking for.
FYI - the early 70's Camaro air cleaner assy is ~ $200. Here is a pic of one in my '64.

DZAUTO May 7th, 08, 3:42 PM HUH??????????????????????????????? Why?
You ain't gonna pull in any more air.
If nothing else, just remove the inner door and its frame.
Jeff74 May 7th, 08, 7:29 PM send me your air cleaner and I will send you 2 repop air cleaners :)
mr 4 speed May 7th, 08, 7:37 PM Danny,we did some extensive testing at a few track rentals on a 70 442 that has a 455 and uses one of those aftermarket kits that feeds the dual snorkel air cleaner via the ductwork under the bumper...no change in ET/MPH..we even got desperate and removed the highbeams and hooked them up there where the headlights are..no change in MPH or ET either..and thats how we left it..even played around with jetting, etc. got nada.Looks cool though.
If you still want to try it,the mid 80's 305 HO's found in the Z28's have a dual snorkerl air cleaner that will work.
FYI,I blocked off the snorkel on my 70 SS454's CI air cleaner with a piece of duct tape on the inside of the air cleaner so it doesn't suck any "hot air" from the under the hood...didn't gain anything either.
Thank goodness for track rentals so all this can be tried out! :D
kettbo May 7th, 08, 7:58 PM What you're saying this was a whole lotta smoke and mirrors....
Maybe even moreso then Air Gap manifolds on street cars?
Sure is an expensive buncha stuff to put on a car that didn't have the 'golly-gee whiz' equipment from the factory.
mr 4 speed May 7th, 08, 10:22 PM Every combo/car is different, thats all I can say. Weather conditions,DA,etc. all have their effect as well.
I just wanted to mention my experience with a similar set up in a heavy A body :)
