I have a big block project in the works and have a weiand part #7544 X celerator low rise single plane intake that came as part of the deal. anybody have experience with one of these?

The general word from engine professionals (not car magazines) is that intake manifolds in a "X" design are not effective to today's intake manifolds with curved runners. Popular in the seventies, but not now. Remember the old Edelbrock Torker for the SBC? How many of those do you see at the swap meets?

IMHO,if you already have it,use it.It's better than a stock, low rise cast iron intake, thats for sure.I have a BBC Torker (the newer design, not the tarantula)and while I wouln't bolt it on my ride for an ET improvement,I would certainly use it for another project instead of buying a new intake.

personally i wouldn't use it unless there's no way you can possibly get another intake. they are a poor design by today's standards. those and the Torker 2's are mainly for hood clearance. they sit lower than any aluminum dual plane does. on a 68 up Chevelle i wouldn't think you'd have a problem with hood clearance even with a flat hood, if you used an rpm or air-gap intake.
the runners are too small to make any topend power, and the fact that it's a single plane means it will have less vacuum and worse drivability than a dual plane and also less bottomend.
my dad had a 68 camaro with a 427 and we tried the Torker 2 and then an older Edlebrock Performer 2-o and the dual plane was much better for street driving and it ran quicker times at the track with the dual plane too. it was however all you could get under the stock SS hood on that car. the rpm intake was too tall or we would've used it instead of the 2-o. BTW, the 2-o was the large oval port intake, not the one they make for the peanut ports. it also had the divider notched down about an inch.

Seems like a dual plane with a .500-.700 airgap at the top of the plenum is the ticket. Kinda like GM cast back in 1966! smile.gif

I'd run it, just keep it carb size on the smaller side.

Gene or anybody else know if I can fit a Holley single plane Strip Dom. intake and a good old 3310-2 under my stock SS hood??

I gotta feeling it will be real close but haven't done any measuring since my motor isn't in yet..

pdq67,

I looked on the Holley website and they don't even list the 300-4 and 300-5 Strip Dominators for the big blocks. I wondering if they even produce them anymore.

Anyway, I used to use a Strip Dominator before I switched to an RPM AirGap. From what I remember from old Holley tech catalogs and comparing the two intakes side by side, it was real close to the same height as an RPM AirGap. I'm thinking it was maybe 1/4" taller than an the Edelbrock.

PDQ67 -

Can't tell you for sure about your setup but my Performer 2.0 w/ 1 1/2" spacer, 3310 and 3" drop base air cleaner fit so closely under my SS hood that I had to use a nut to hold down the cleaner lid. A wing nut was too high.

What might make this relative to your Q is that I took measurements for hood clearance because I want to install a old high rise dual quad Offy manifold and needed to figure the room I have for air cleaners.

Measuring from the manifold deck at the distributor base (which should be constant despite manifold design) to the top of the air cleaner lid on my performer setup comes to 11".
ANY more than that and I think you may have problems. It should be noted though that my car is a clone and I don't know if the frame towers were swapped when the BB was installed, so a true SS might have a little more leeway.

Thx. guy's.

Looks like I got another probl --, er, opportunity hood-wise..

No performance data yet, but I will be running one on my 408BBC. Took a couple of hours and matched it up to the large oval port gasket. Plan is to run the Excelerator with a 1" 4-hole spacer.

I think that they sell a divider that cuts the plenum in half and is supposed to boost your low end while losing very little to nothing at the top. I would check the web site to get more facts. i have never used it but if i had it i would not hesitate to try it as long as i had enough converter and gears. good luck mike

Big block intake measurements guy's that I gleened through the years as I was shopping for an intake..

BB E-brock Performer is stock height at 4.3" front to 5.4" rear = 4.85" middle.

Performer RPM is 4.45" to 5.4" = 4.85" middle.

Holley 300-4 is 4.77" to 6.16" = 5.46" middle.

Weiand 8005 is 4.63" to 6.12" = 5.375" middle.

Victor Jr. Oval Port is 5.9" to 5.9" = 5.9"??????

Weiand Team G is 5.81" to 7.38 = 6.59" middle.

I can't say if these are still correct or not so probably should check each time..
