While I'm recouperating from my minor surgery, 11 days ago.

I just got a private message asking me how I was doing, and it reminded me of this.

I was living in Coopersville Michigan. It was 1958, and my dad was working on road construction, he drove bull dozers and whatever they had.

So our family moved there, it was about 100 miles from our regular home, we would stay the summer there to be with my Dad.

I'm 17 years old at the time, a nice sunny sunday afternoon.

I was up in Muskegon visiting some buddies, and heading home. I'm just coming into the outskirts of Coopersville, and there is a little crest in the hill, I'm probably going 60 or so, and just as I crest the hill, I see what looks like somebody standing beside a car way down the road.

I don't know why, but I hit brakes immediately, I've always been one of these skittish type guys, anyway, I slowed her down and proceeded toward the car setting down there.

It's two michigan state troopers, one in the car and one outside thats waving me down.

They had a plain jane 58 ford, it had a big long box setting in the trunk, made out of wood with a mesh in the side of it, that was my first radar shot:) I pulled up, rolled down the window, and he was mad, he hollered at me, why did you slow down when you saw us.

I can't remember what I said, but he checked my license and let me go, if I wouldn't have hit the brakes, they would of had me.

Anyway, that was my first radar.

I didn't know they had that back then! For some reason I pictured a cop car with a large satellite looking dish on the roof.

Was there a gerbil running on a wheel inside of it? Or could you not see through the screen.

The trunks back then were pretty big, and they had the trunk lid wide open to get it in there, they weren't quite quick enough that day.

The highway is tough but the intown streets are tougher. they pulled my daughter over because she started accelerated be fore she got to the sign of the posted faster limit. it cost her $75.
The highway through here is one of the worse in winter because of all the open fields next to it. there was a 50 car pileup last month.

I believe Andy and Barney were a couple of years after that, but we had a local cop in our little town years ago, the sheriffs department donated an old cruiser they had, and put a number 54 on it, I guess you know what we called him. Oh, and he didn't like it at all.:)

I found this when they first started using it.

Police began using radar to catch speeders in 1948. The first radar systems operated on a low-frequency airwave band known as the X-band; later models switched to the K-band waves, which have a far higher frequency, to elude radar detectors. Detector manufacturers countered by changing their products so both X and K bands could be received.

I thought this was interesting from there:
"Traffic cops have the highest rate of testicular cancer than any other profession in the world. This is a result from them putting the radar guns in their laps without first shutting the machine off. And who says the police don’t have any balls!!"

Don't be pointing that cancer gun at me!
