: quench ?'s

As many of you have probably noticed, I'm just starting a engine build. I've got a

454 .60 over, kieth black hypertuectic domed piston's and stock rod's with arp bolts.

781 head's, stock valve size, should be 10.25:1 compression. and this cam powermax 286 (http://www.cranecams.com/?show=browseParts&lvl=2&prt=5&Vehicle_Type=Auto&Cylinders=8&Engine_Make=CHEVROLET&Year=1971&Engine_Size=396-454%20C.I.&partNumber=134241&partType=camshaft)

My question is, how do I determine what quench I need? The machine shop I used is closed until tuesday, and I wanted to try to get the heads on this weekend. The fel-pro gasket kit they provided me with has a set of 8180pt2 head gaskets. Would this be acceptable, as far as quench goes? Thanks for the help, Dave

Look on the gasket package and it should say what the compressed thickness is. What you want is .035-.045" quench distance.

Just take your compressed gasket thickness as Pat stated and add how far down in the hole your pistons are at TDC and that is your quench.

If I have pop up piston's, do I measure on the flat of the piston? I know it sound's stupid, but I'm just trying to do this right. Dave

From the flat part. But you have to do it right. Do a search on "deck height" and "measuring deck height." It's rather involved to explain and since it has been done before...
