Hi Folks....I am intersested in your comments and comparrison of corresponding build sheet and cowl tag data for a 1970 Chevelle.

I have a Van Nuys car. The cowl tag shows a 3B build date (2nd week in March, 1970). There are two sets of six digit numbers on the third line of the cowl tag. The first set is 585008, which is also printed in the top right box of the build sheet ( 585008 69 0261), along with the VIN. The second set of six numbers is 100261 (note that 0261 is the last part of the literal printed in the top right box of the build sheet). I have read that the first two numbers in this series represent the date of the month the car was built (10), and the last four numbers represent the number of car built that day (0261). According to this theory, my Chevelle was the 261st car built on March 10, 1970 in Van Nuys. The top left box of my build sheet reads 10 03-10. I interpret the 10 meaning Chevrolet division (1) , 70 model year (0), and 03-10 as the date the car was built, which validates and corresponds with the 3B build date and tenth day of the month in the second six digit series on the cowl tag "10"0261.

Are your build sheets and cowl tags are consistent with this? Also would like to know what the "69" represents in the sequence in the top right of the build sheet, and the 585008 on the cowl tag (same numger in top right of the build sheet).

Scott, The first two numbers of the second six digit number may be the schedule number followed by the date in box 10. This is what I have found on the 1969 Freemont tags and build sheets. The atlanta tags for 1970 appear to use the same number sequence. That's what I have determined from my 69 research and it appears to be consistant by the plants using the double six digit number. Of course i have no proof but i'm confident it is a correct theory. hope that helps take it easy Andy

According to this theory, my Chevelle was the 261st car built on March 10, 1970 in Van Nuys.

Not possible it was built in one day.

If that theory you have is even plausible, that would only be the date the body was released from the body bank into the final assembly line. Typically it took 2 days (4 shifts) to go through the Fisher Body process and another 1-1/2 day (3 shifts) for the final assembly process start to finish so saying it was built on x day is not possible. It was started during the week of the date on the trim tag and thats about all you can say.

fyi - Fremont was a GMAD plant and was charged with building other GM A-body car like the Olds, Buick, Pontiac as well as the Chevelle. AS of 1969 the hourly rate for Chevys built at GMAD Fremont was 16.6 per hour, sedans, hardtops, El Camino/Station Wagon and convertible.
