just wondering how well will a small 115V stick welder do for tacking on sheet metal patches.

It seems like it would be really hard to control to keep from burning holes in the rather thin sheet metal. Stick welders are more for welding heavier steel.

its a small stick welder only 70 amps, if that makes a difference

wont happen, sorry.
I set my TIG welder at 42 amps, a stick welder at 70 amps...scarey.

If you can find .025" stick electrodes you might have a chance. ;)

Get yourself a MIG and save yourself a lot of aggravation, stick welders are for building boat trailers.

Eastwood at one time sold an attachment called a "stitch welder" for use on an AC stick welder for welding sheetmetal. A friend gave me one but I have never tried it, I have a MIG welder.
