IgnitionMan, I was hoping I could get some advice on setting up my engine. Specs are
4.350 bore 4.25 stroke for 505 cu in.
Custom Wiseco pistons 13-1 comp.
GMPP rectangular heads- aluminum semi-open chambered (hence need for custom pistons)
Roller cam 258/268 at .050 .680/.700 on 110 centerline
Dart Intake
New holley dominator carb pn 8896 w/intermediat idle circuit.
MSD dist. and 7 series box.

I was wondering about whether or not to lock the dist. or maintain a mechanical advance. What would a good starting point for timing? If I should remove the power valves, or leave them be? And what would be a good starting point for jetting. This is not a street motor, but I don't want something that runs too poorly around the pits. Local track is about 700ft above sea level.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Sorry, but I don't think Ignition man posts here anymore. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, I-Man lurks around www.chevytalk.com (http://www.chevytalk.com) and throws in his .02 on occasion. Seems a lot milder since he left TC.

I truly miss the I-Man Defensive Pre-Emptive (and post-emptive) Strikes http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif. It was fun to watch the fur fly! (as long as it wasn't MY fur)

I'll probably get NAILED for saying this, especially since they've been so nice to each other lately, but we DO have Don and Ed http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif.

Plus the ever-returning Synth Wars and the Head Material Battles.

Can't forget about the unbridled and unabashed happiness and humor of Big Block Dave! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/tongue.gif

We even talk about Tech Stuff and Chevelles! And Chevolvos. Yes, this is a good place to be; a VERY good place. It's home.

Just like a noisy family here at TC. We did stick to the issues though during our recent controversial discussions.

Babyrat, I cant speak for Dave, but in the past his preferred setup for high cr/big cam drag stuff was lots of inital ( as much as can be allowed to crank it over ) and a short quick curve. Something on the order of 16-18 inital + 18 mechanical, setting total at between 34-36, or possibly more if the mill requries it.

The power valve on the secondary is almost academic on a drag car. Remove it and jet up +8. I ran a 750 dp on the street w/o secondary PV and saw no ill effects at all. Simply due to the fact that when I cracked the secs, i didnt do it "marginally".

Hey guys, thanks for the leads- maybee I will find the elusive IgnitionMan after all. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
I'm heading to the track on saturday, so hopefully I will be able to answer some of my own carb/jetting questions. I'll let you know how it went on Monday. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
