Absent the build sheet, can anyone help me with the numbers listed on the metal tag from this 1970 TH 400 Chevelle transmission?

Thanks

I'm not much up on these tags, but I'll take a stab...
70 CF- This is the code, your tag should've had big letters on each side of the senter rivet that read C F. 1970, obviously. I believe this is correct for an LS5.
428 is a julian date, dates started at Jan 1, 1969, so 428 is about the 2nd of February. I would guess you car to be built around the end of Feb or the first of March, if this is the numbers matching trans?? The VIN number should be stamped on a flat area below the tag, above the pan rail.
22956 is a unit number.
We'll see how I did! :)

Dave,
I think you meant to say CF was for the 402 (396) Chevelle, Camaro and Nova. A Turbo 400 coded for a 454 would be a CY.

Thanks...the transmission is numbers matching and from a numbers matching Chevelle built in the 1st week of March 1970. The VIN is stamped on the driver's side pad. The matching number engine mated up to this transmission is a 396 350 HP. 70 - CF is stamped in large lettering on the lower left side of the tag.

My 70 454 LS5 is 70-CS on both the tag and build sheet.

Thanks for your help. Lets see if any others can shed some light.

Many thanks

Rick, my 70 454 LS5 TH 400 tag reads 70-CS, same on the build sheet. Could CY be for a 454 LS6?

Yes it is. I have LS-6 on my brain.....

My 70 LS-5 shows a 300 in the middle of the tag (julian code) with a " 70-CS 1228" on the bottom of the tag. The build sheet shows CS in box #28.

Scott, you are correct. My LS5 is the same.
