: Wheel codes
bluechevelless Mar 8th, 08, 2:59 AM Alright I tried searching but it always says internet explorer can not blah blah....
So... Would a 70 SS chevelle built in Nov. 69 have YA or AO coded 14x7 SS wheels?
Also Can anyone tell me what all the numbers mean on the wheel?
Bunz-T Mar 8th, 08, 7:44 AM Maybe this will help a little. Do not know why the 69 SS code not included but is YA.
Dave Birdwell Mar 8th, 08, 9:06 AM I believe that some very early '70s used the YA wheel. Maybe Jeff or Chris will chime in here to prove or dispell this notion.
oldtimebaseballfan Mar 8th, 08, 10:09 AM It has been confirmed by Chris and Jeff that the early built 70 model year Chevelles could have YA wheels. My November 5 built SS has YA wheels and the build sheet shows in box 45, 5-YA.
bluechevelless Mar 8th, 08, 12:24 PM after reviewing my timeline, my cowl tag states it was built Dec. 18, 1969. I must have been thinking of my dads 69 Camaro.
bluechevelless Mar 8th, 08, 1:15 PM just looked at the wheels, I have 2 YA codes and 1 LZ then the other has no letter designation, just numbers.
Gary S Mar 8th, 08, 7:14 PM YA are already mentioned, the 69 and very early 70 SS wheels for 69-70 Chevelle, 69-70 Nova, and 69 Camaro. LZ is the code for a similar wheel used on Oldsmobiles. The Olds wheel would have originally had chromed spokes instead of silver paint like Chevy.

OUCH! I just gave away a set of what I thought were Monte Carlo rallys but I think they may have been for a Z-28! He is a good friend and I would never ask for them back. Next time I see him I will get the codes from the wheels. They were 15X6 and narrow enough for the suburban (1952) he is building.

1968Chevelle300Deluxe Mar 8th, 08, 7:47 PM i have the YA SS Wheels and i saw a pair like it on ebay that were restored go for $900 with trim rings and caps so how much would mine be worth dont have the rings and caps but need a repaint and if i painted them how much would they be worth thanks Ryan

Anybody paying $900 for a pair of YA wheels is paying too much. These wheels aren't that hard to find that they should command that kind of price. I have a full set of 4 of them in my garage, and I guarantee you they aren't worth that much.
1968Chevelle300Deluxe Mar 9th, 08, 4:41 PM these had the chrome "spokes" and the ring around the wheel chromed like what is on my 70 and then the insides where the lug nuts go were blacked out:thumbsup:
bookmaker19 Mar 9th, 08, 10:17 PM My SS schedule build date 1-20-70 Atlanta, Has AO wheels & box 45 on build sheet confirms AO. all (5) rims have same date code also???????
WAX-UM Mar 9th, 08, 10:17 PM My Jan 29th 70 car has AOs but I think they used both just a few months prior..

Did a little research and and it gives an unclear pattern about the approximate time. I do not have enough build sheets in this period as I would like, since a lot of the ones I have collected copies of were LS6 related. Below is what I have, and it would be helpfull for all of us, if you have one close to the timeline in question, please give us your info. These are the cars I have, the engine, build date, and plant of production.
Sced date Engine Plant Prod Wheel Code
10/27/69 L78 Kansas City YA
11/07/69 L78 Baltimore AO
11/10/69 L34 Baltimore YA
11/10/69 L78 Kansas City AO
11/12/69 L34 Van Nuys AO
11/13/69 L34 Kansas City AO
11/14/69 L34 Kansas City AO
12/04/69 L78 Baltimore AO
12/12/69 LS6 Kansas City AO
12/16/69 LS6 Van Nuys AO
All build sheets I have with 1970 production dates show AO code.
Interesting in that I have two Baltimore cars and the 11/07 car shows the AO code but the 11/10 car has YA. Also, even though the build sheet shows one code, that does not mean the car could not be built with the other. I know of a low mileage one owner GTO that has its spare in the trunk and has a different later used code than the build sheet shows. Wheel does date for the car. I guess if we could draw any conclusion from my limited data, it would be that YA code wheels were probably used through mid-Nov, and by Dec, most or all were probably using AO. I sure would like to have more build sheets from all plants before we could draw any more conclusions. Please do not draw too many conclusions from my limited data, and again, if you have a build sheet in this period, please share the data, it would be helpful for ongoing research.

Scott D Mar 9th, 08, 11:13 PM My 1970 LS-5 cowl tag has a Van Nuys build date of 3B (2nd week March). The build sheet shows AO in box 45. I looked at the wheels....it shows 12 6 AO....December 6 casting for 1970 model year.

My 11/20/69 built L78 reads YA in box #45
Dave Birdwell Mar 10th, 08, 8:52 PM Jeff- I have an Atlanta 12-09 with AO, and a Kansas 9-24 with YA. That's the only early shhets I have.
bluechevelless Mar 11th, 08, 12:10 AM SO should I clean these up and use them or just sell them and keep my Repop wheels?

I guess Danny, that would depend on what type of Chevelle you actually want. If your goal is authenticity, than original wheels with codes on them must be used. If this is not a goal, then the reproductions will do just fine. If you decide to use the originals, I would suggest you take them to someone with a spin balancer and have them run the bare wheels first to check for staightness, before you spend any time on cleanup. Also, check out the lug holes, as these tend to get worn out from overtightening, or undertightening over the years. Good luck!!!!

bluechevelless Mar 15th, 08, 1:32 AM Alright thanks for the tips, My repop wheels are already rusting in the seam which pisses me off since they are only 3 years old and only been on the car driving for a year. Ill try and find someone that will test for straightness. Im also thinking about going ahead and using the repop wheels or just the two YA code wheels then buying the 15x8 Repop wheels for the back since 14" tires is hard to find in a decent size.
deano's 70 ss Oct 10th, 08, 4:35 PM Did GM ever make a 14x8 rally wheel for the 70 chevelle? have a friend who claims he has a set.

No.
DUKE Jan 14th, 09, 4:17 PM I thought the Olds wheels with the chrome were the "LY" code. Does anyone know for sure what the "LZ" code goes to?
71 Chevelle
lloydt2442 Jun 9th, 09, 10:09 PM Sorry to bring this back from the dead but I have a 70 ss chevelle. I checked the codes and two have AO and two have YA. is this possible to be original? or did someone swap them out sometime during the years? Im not sure of the build date as the cowl tag is missing:sad: the vin number is 136370k162294 which would be a kansas city built car.
Thanks,
Lloyd
lloydt2442 Jun 9th, 09, 11:42 PM ok so according to my sequence number it was built very early february. so would the ya wheels be correct?
