: What Do You Think ? 79 TRANS AM Experts Needed
dh443443 Mar 7th, 08, 9:00 PM What do you guys think ? Any help would be appreciated/ http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/car/597396807.html
My kid has changed his mind again. Go figure.
Buy him a beater :D. If he is indeed a kid, I think a T/A from that era is probably not a good fit. Insurance might be a killer too. Seems a little high for a hotrodded T/A even being one of the silver anniversary cars. It does have the potential of being worth more if it was restored to stock. Good Luck :)
dh443443 Mar 7th, 08, 9:18 PM We will work on it together an since he's 15 he won't be able to drive it for a year and I haven't kept a Hot Rod for more than a year. I heard these are going up in price weekly. Anyone else hear that ?
Xtreme70SS396 Mar 7th, 08, 9:43 PM Check the engine in that car. Many of them came with an Olds 403 small block. Not a bad engine with a better set of heads on them.
cfChevelle Mar 7th, 08, 9:48 PM If the motor is factory w/o mods, then it might not be so bad for a first car. IIRC, '79 T/As were lacking in HP. Looking cool w/o too much HP might not be a bad combo.
Dave Birdwell Mar 7th, 08, 9:54 PM Yes, values of these cars are going up even with the soft market. I have one that is alot nicer than that one I am going to take to the spring auction at Auburn IN. if I don't sell it first. The body is rust free, and the interior is brand new. Car needs the engine pulled and detailed, and the A/C box reinstalled. Mine has a nice 350 Olds in it that runs like a top. Send me a PM if you're interested. You'd be money ahead if you bought mine, all the tough stuff is done.
Joel642DRpost Mar 7th, 08, 10:02 PM On the subject of T/A's Year One are building some wicked "Smokee and the bandit edition" Trans Ams. They have three different levels of builds. The bad boy has an LS motor @600 hp. All kinds of upgraded suspension and goodies. I'm sure they have a very healthy price tag. I viewed it on a Hot rod show last Sunday morning. Do you think there are a lot of the 78/79 T/A's still out there to be restored. They don't seem as popular as chevelle's or say old camaro's. I've never really heard of a large following on these car. I think there cool. Maybe my next restore after watching that show.
dgwar Mar 7th, 08, 10:59 PM i have an 80 with a 400 ram air IV, it runs really nice. gets a lot of looks too.

Wow. The heads and intake are worth more than my car!
I bet it does run. If it weren't for the fact that most Pontiacs used cast rods, they would've rivaled the LS6 for power. Can't RPM a poncho like a BBC.
Joel642DRpost Mar 8th, 08, 1:25 PM I checked the YearOne website to look at the "Badit Edition T/A". For the stage 3 T/A it's a cool $129,000 dollars. I thought to myself is that all! Well heck maybe I should buy Two.. Lol!! I wonder how much ol'Burt gets for his signature on the deal. Does a Sally Fields look alike come in the passenger seat. It better for that price.

if it is rust free..
that a good price..
but for a first car...
they are tail happy... in the rain..
even with a straight 6
amartinson Mar 8th, 08, 11:55 PM I know the ad says rust free, but the car has been repainted right? Unless it is just the poor photos, it looks like there is a strange design on the hood where the bird should be, and I don't see "Trans Am" on the rear.
I also don't like ads that say ALL original, then list the replaced parts.
Could be nice, but would need a much closer look.

One question to ask yourself. Can my kid afford gas for it at $4.00 a gallon??My brother had one of those.Nice car but real thirsty!!
BACK FROM THE DEAD Mar 9th, 08, 5:29 PM Second Gen F bodies are great handling, fun cars. i've had a few of them.
Those "Smokey" T/A's are going through the roof price wise as we speak (or type).
If you can find a nice one for a good price, get it. One place to check for rust on them is the panel up under the trunk, between the rear bumper and the trunk floor. Commonly overlooked, and often rusted.
Not sure from the pics if that one is worth $7500 bucks, but it should haul some serious ass with those three-foot headers!
BigChevyThunder Mar 9th, 08, 8:45 PM I bought a 79 T/A new , no t tops no decals no radio no air no power windows.. ... total strippo with the pontiac 400 and a T10 with a hurst shifter/linkage from the factory . That car ran hard ! I know some will not beleive it but I think that car was comparable to my 70 Z/28 . It was a great car !Still have the build sheet :)

Steve Johnson Mar 9th, 08, 10:29 PM Gotta love only $90 for the engine upgrade!
glennslanaker Mar 10th, 08, 7:13 PM the few clean examples of these TA's are doing okay in the market. same with Z28's from the same era. but people still won't pay much for non original cars needing everything. this car looks high to me. i bet if you looked at it, you'd come to the conclusion you'll need a full restoration. so $7500 + $20,000= 27,500, IF you do most of the work yourself and it's not very rusty.
i looked on ebay, and there's exactly 3 TA's from this era bid over $15k and they are all super low mile cream puffs. one has 18k miles, another 30K, original paint that nice, etc...
