: Superior Axles not so Superior.... with LS1 Rear Disc
ss396boy Mar 7th, 08, 7:59 PM Just an FYI, Superior c-clip axles+LS1 rear brakes = PITA!!
The ID of the rear disc does not sit flush with the outter face of the axles, which means you have to get them turned down. Seems lame they did this.
just a warning .....
Gokou Mar 7th, 08, 8:26 PM Pretty standard to have to do on all rear axles when doing a disk conversion regardless of axle brand.
I've turned down stock GM axles too.

animal69 Mar 7th, 08, 11:03 PM So you are mixing mismatched parts and are surprised that they need work to fit together. What did you expect?
tlowe Mar 7th, 08, 11:51 PM every 10/ 12 bolt rear i have ever put rear disks had to have the small lip taken off to seat the rotor fully. it simply takes 5 minutes with a file per axle. maybe they could have informed you about this simple to overcome task. tom
Cameano Mar 8th, 08, 3:42 AM I had to turn down the axles on my Firebird when I put the T/A discs on it. Since the car has a posi, I just fired it up in gear, ran a grinder over the high spot, and shut it down to check, took a couple of minutes.
rianbechtold Mar 8th, 08, 5:21 AM A machinist did mine for $15 bucks for the pair, took about 20 minutes. Thats what happens when the axles were designed for drums with an outward flange instead of a rotor with an inside flange.
Chris R Mar 8th, 08, 6:42 PM Are there any recommendations for replacement axles to aviod dealing with machining a set of stock ones? I would rather install a set thats ready to go on my 66 12 bolt instead of screwing with the originals.
Derek69SS Mar 8th, 08, 6:44 PM GM axles DON'T need to be machined to fit LS1 F-body discs... His complaint is that the Superior axles have a bigger flange, and therefore must be machined. :)
Randy 67EC Mar 9th, 08, 11:32 PM The Superior axles for my 8.2 10-bolt fit the LS1 discs just fine, with a little room to spare. Maybe the 12-bolt axles are different?

I have moser axles and the rotors did not fit. Tried the stock ones I pulled and no go either. They look like they fit but when the axle is spun they wobbled. I have heard the same from others.

So did you no longer use the disc setup? I got the axles turned down just enough so they sit flush now with the axle face. Now I just need to get either studs or screw in's.

Nope, I got mine turned also. And just to make sure the rotor fit PERFECTLY snug, I used 1/2" screw in studs.

Most aftermarket 10/12 bolt axles have an axle flange OD that is small enough (~5.9" or so) to fit in late model discs. However, it is the hub diameter that can be a problem. 12 bolt axle shafts are supposed to have a 2.81" hub while the 10 bolt axle shafts are supposed to have a 2.775" hub diameter. Late model discs require the 2.775" hub diameter and thus, if you have 12 bolt axles, you'll need to have the base of hub turned down to 2.775". If you purchased aftermarket 10 bolt axles, you should be fine from what I have seen. If you have a 12 bolt, one bolt-on solution is to purchase 30 spline 10 bolt axles from Moser or Superior. These will fit right into the 12 bolt housing but have the correct 2.775" hub (I called Moser to confirm this).
FWIW, my Superior 10 bolt axles fit my LS1 discs just fine.
mbbeard21 Jan 9th, 10, 12:13 AM I used the Superior Axles as well for the 12 bolt. Rebuilt some brakes off the rear of an '85 Corvette and everything fit just fine with no machining. Had to make a cpl brackets to mount the calipers. I still have the .dxf file for the caliper brackets if anyone wants them. you can plug em into a plasma cutter interface and ...voila! All said and done it cost around $150 for the whole brake system, including soda-blasting & powdercoating everything.
ss396boy Jan 9th, 10, 12:31 AM Damn... back from the depths of hell post.... ;) man almost 2 yrs later and i'm still workin on this thing... :(
