I'm changing out the power steering gear box & rag joint on the '72 since they are original and have a close ratio to replace it with. I want to take the steering shaft (in the engine bay) out for paint and not sure how to go about it. I see there is a clamp bolt by the firewall and is the shaft 2 piece. There is a step in size in the middle and does it slide in or out there too. Just need the easiest way to get it out & not get into a can of worms. I'll hold off on messing with the clamp bolt till I get some guidance. Thanks. Dave

If it's the same as my 68 all you have to do is loosen the bolt on the upper part of the shaft by the firewall. When you remove the bolt the shaft will release from the shaft coming out of the firewall. I have mine out right now. I will try to take a picture of it and post it so you can see if it's the same.

Wow Brian. Looks just like mine. I really appreciate your input, but the pics say it all. I just didn't want to pull it out & not knowing what other pieces will fall with it. And I sure didn't want to start taking the column apart from inside the car. By the way, that huge aluminum lung really got my attention. Thanks again Brian. Dave

Here's a link to a thread in the Restoration forum on how to properly detail this shaft... http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=212397
