On 71 Chevelle, Changing from auto to 4 speed. I have the hump I need to attach to the floor tunnel, console I need to reinstall, I'll need a 4 sp top plate for the console, BUT what else goes there. Do you just look down into the console/shifter thru the hump slot and see the ground, or is there another rubber boot that goes in the console to keep air, noise and odors from entering .. I know the hump is slotted maybe 2 inch give or take and maybe 8 inches long, what other cover is there? Thanks

You need a rubber boot and trim ring that bolts to the floor. Any Chevelle parts dealer should carry them. 1968 thru 1972 should all be the same.

I did not use the peice to bolt the boot to the floor, i put the boot between the top plate and the shifter tunnel itself.
came out pretty good.

Yup, the boot I bought for the manual trans hump has six holes for the screws, I used self tapping screws as the hump was not pre-drilled. The ring sits on top of the boot and seals the boot on top of the hump. I first laid the ring over the hump to run the self tapping screws into the hump, then removed everything and reassembled with the boot, I didn't want to snag on the boot when making holes. It's easier to slide the handle into the boot and bolt up the handle prior to screwing down the trim ring.
bdc1013: Thats a good idea. I just put a new boot on my 69 a couple of weeks ago. I wish I would have done as you did.

I just did this on my '69. A note to the wise. Mock up the motor and trans into the frame. Then, place the hump panel on the floor and shift through the gears to make sure the shifter does not hit the hump. Also make sure to have the boot in place, the console, and top plate, as it will come into play with the clearance of the hump panel and console plate. The aftermarket humps they sell are not perfect. So the above needs to be done in order to have it right. Once you do the above, then screw 4-6 pilot screws to secure the hump. Then tack it down.
