: Which gear to run?
1971 Chevelle Sep 29th, 04, 10:45 AM I got a mild 350 with a turbo 350 tranny and 2.73 gears right now. My tires are 215/60/14 so I guess they are about 24" tall. I just need some better acceleration. I will be cruising on the highway quite a bit at who knows what speed. I was thinking of 3.08 or 3.23 or 3.31. Any suggestions. I don't want high rpm on the Highway. Thanks.
Well, any increase in your rear gear is going to increase your RPMs at a given speed. If you don't want to run high RPMs, then don't get a much taller gear. The 3.31s would make a difference. That said, I don't know if the difference would be noticeable enough for you to invest all that cash in different gears.
Some others have more experience with this. I've never done just a gear swap. When we changed to the 3.73s we also did a bunch of other stuff (like a whole new engine and trans), so it wasn't a straight comparison.
I wouldn't go from a 2.73 to a 3.08 though. For all that effort you wouldn't notice enough of a difference to really be happy with it - is my guess anyway.
For the money to do the gears maybe you could instead put it into the engine somewhere and give it some more oats. What is your current engine setup like? Do you have a 4bbl, good intake, decent exhaust, etc?
1971 Chevelle Sep 29th, 04, 2:36 PM It is a 350 with headers, performer intake, quadrajet, and a mild cam.
quikss Sep 29th, 04, 2:57 PM I'd change to maybe 3.23 or 3.31 and get taller tires. The gears are going to raise highway rpm but a taller tire would help some to lower the rpm, in effect your not increasing the rpm as much. Just a suggestion, maybe someone else has a better idea for you, good luck, Jeff
69LS1 Sep 29th, 04, 3:00 PM I used to have a Monte Carlo that had 2.56's and 27 in tall tires.... talk about a slug.... even on the freeway it was limp.I couldnt take it any more and slipped in a new carrier and a set of 3.23's....Night and day difference.... With the 2.56's you had to really open the throttle just to leave a stop sign... with the 3.23's it took half the effort... In this car there was no difference in mileage but driveability improved a bunch.... Still wasnt a rocket but did make a nice improvement.
If you have 24 in tall tires you cant go too low or you'll be doing 3200 plus on the freeway.... I have 3.07's with 245/ 60R-14 that are the same diameter and turning 2800 RPM @ 70 with the 4 speed... when I had the TH350 it was about 2950 or so due to the converter.
i'd put as low a gear as you can live with. 3.31's would make a noticable difference, 3.08's aren't worth messing with, IMO. if you don't like the rpms on the hiway with 3.31's, you could always get taller tires. how much is too much, as far as rpms on the hiway? personally i have 3.42 gears in my s-10 with 27" tall tires and it is a little too low geared to run 65mph, at least for my liking, but 55mph isn't too bad really. it's about 25-2600rpms at 60mph.
1971 Chevelle Sep 29th, 04, 6:49 PM IS there anywhere I could get a strong enough th200 r4 and put like 3.42 gears in it. I want to take off faster but I don't want to be over 2500 rpm at 55mph. Thanks.
m71 Sep 29th, 04, 10:32 PM just about all of the aftermarket tranny places have hipo 200r4's. Art Carr, Hughes, TCI, blah, blah, blah. if i were you i'd just go with the 3.31's. .02
