: Getting Close...

Well, I finally got my block back from the machine shop for the second time yesterday. When I was first putting the engine back together I had a head bolt thread strip out. It had previously been heli-coiled and underwent major surgery this time. I had to tear the engine completely apart so the repair could be made :( I've got it 95% together at this point, just have to install the damper, distributor and carb. I hope to get it on the engine dyno next week. Here are a couple pics.

I ended up making my own intake gaskets to accomodate the modifications that have been done to the heads (port floor raised):

I painted the intake manifold with Eastwoods Aluma blast:

I was a tired puppy after 10 staight hours of wrenching. I think I have close to 100 hours in the engine assembly. Better keep my day job smile.gif

I like seeing pic's of your car Ken. I have a 66 painted red, same wheels as you, and a 454 also. I cruised my car in 68 degree weather yesterday :D . I love California. I hope you break into the 9's or low 10's. Looks great.

Real nice Ken, Those ports look huge width wise, are my eyes playing tricks or it just the picture?
The scribe lines on the gaskets...are they where the original port was ?
Also, any chance of a shot or two of the manifold prior to installing it?

BTW...why is Fred Durst in your garage?? smile.gif

Sweet! Lookin' good. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Just got my block back also graemlins/hurray.gif
....finally! Cleaned all of the passages, checked crank mains clearances, all OK, installed Moroso trash screen in lifter valley. (how long does it take for that friggin epoxy snot to harden??!!)

Keep up the good work Ken, looking forward to some ET numbers for that head work you had done.

Will it be dyno'd by the same shop as the 1st version? Maybe you can update us on those dyno #'s vs track times. That should give you a "ball park" of what kind of mph to look for once you get the new #'s. The et will be up to your suspension getting it to the ground though, as you know.

Are you referring to the intake runners? If so, yes they are pretty large smile.gif The scribe lines on the gasket are from a standard FelPro gasket. That is what I used as a pattern. It was a pain to cut the new gaskets. Mr. Gasket sells blank gasket material which is what I used. That stuff is pretty tough to cut even with a fresh razor blade. Here are a few pics of the manifold:

However, I never did dyno my old solid roller combo. The stuff on my web site (engine dyno) was from the old hyd. roller engine. I did chassis dyno the car with the solid roller but it didn't have a good tune up at the time and I did quite a few things to it between the chassis dyno pulls and my best passes (electric fans, electric water pump, etc.). The main reason I'm dynoing this engine is to see where peak torque is at so I'll know if any converter changes are needed, and also just to make sure it runs ok before I put it in the car ;) First timer worries I guess....

ken, what rods are you using this time around?also full floaters or press pin?

Mr68,

I have Crower Sportsman I-Beam rods in there. My machinist recommended either Crower or Lunati rods. I looked at both and the Crowers were a little cheaper and were rated for the same power. I'm running a Lunati Racer Series crank. The rods are full floating.

Hey kjet, I got a question for yah. What guideplates are you using for your heads. Mine are off and I don't feel like cutting and welding them to get the geometry straight unless I really must. I'm using Manely guideplates.

Ken. Looks good. I got mine running last night. I had a little scare. Need to get my confidence back w/ the thing. Really don't want mechanical problems this year. Got it running timed etc. then ran it up to about 5000 RPM and it died!! Checked timing and it was way retarded. My hart sunk. We retimed it and fired it up and I had no oil pressure!! Now I'm chewing my tongue like crazy about to throw up. I started checking out the Dist.. It has a ring on it that you can adjust to set the depth of the shaft into the motor. That ring had worked loose and allowed the dist to climb out of the motor to the point that the oil drive shaft was disengaged. Simple fix and no harm done. With the time and $$ invested, stuff like that ands a few more grays.
