: Exhaust confusion

I just realized that there isn't an 'exhaust' specific forum, so I guess here is ok?

I just spent the last hour or so reading posts on exhausts, but I'm still screwed up. I want to order my 'complete' exhaust, and have it ready when I finally get to drop my BB into my 67.

Was thinking of the Pypes X exhaust syste (http://www.pysales.com/iwwidb.pvx?;multi_item_submit)m (that link says it's for a 1964-77 Chevelle & El Camino - I guess they must ask your specific year when you order. That sure can't fit all years) and for mufflers, the Dynomax Ultra-Flo SS (http://www.jegs.com/p/Dynomax/744882/10002/-1/10265)

Am I missing something, or will this work ok? (From headers back) I still have to order headers (and no idea which ones) but I want to get it right the first time, with headers that fit fairly well

I've got a Pypes system - very high quality, good stuff. I had no problems with fit at all, I wouldn't worry about it.

That said, I think most of the systems from brand-namers fit pretty well, you'd only have to worry a little when you get to the bigger 3" systems.

That kit will pretty much fit all A-body cars.. Some of the pipes are longer and will need to be trimmed to fit your particular car..

I just purchased the Ground Up system for my 69 Chevelle. I'm having trouble getting it to fit correctly. If money is available, I'd recomend the Gardner system, it's just the best out there if you want a factory correct look.

TIP: Use the band clamps to get everything positioned - they work great, don't crimp the pipe at all so you can spin/maneuver the pipes easier. I put a little anti-seize inside the flared portions, it helped a lot also during fitting.

Your planned system is very similar to what I was running. I had dual 3" pipes with an X-pipe and the DynoMax Ultra-flows. I have since removed the X-pipe because I hated the sound. It took out all of the low frequency sounds And made the exhaust note very tinny. When I removed the X-pipe and replaced it with a H-pipe, the sound improved but it was still very quiet with the Ultra-flows. This is with a 540 big block. I plan on pulling the Ultra-flows this summer and replacing them with bullet glass packs. Big blocks should sound like big blocks!

Don't know what happened to the Pypes link in my original post. Goes to some Pontiac site that I've never seen before

Is there much of a performance difference between a 2 1/2" exhaust and a 3"? If not, I'll most likely go with this 2 1/2" from Summit (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=PYE%2DSGA10&FROM=MG) Couldn't find a Dynomax Ultra-flow at Summit though (if they are year specific, only go back to 1968)

If you're not pushing 500 HP, there really wont be any performanse difference between the 3" and the 2.5".. I went 3" just for the deeper sound, but 2.5" would be a LOT easier to install...

wheel, e-mail me with the details of your install. The system fits 69 quite well. We'll get it figured out. I agree that Gardner has the best fitting system. However, it is a 'concours' exhaust system. Not a system for the owner that likes to D R I V E his car ;). Most BB Chevelles could lose 30-40hp going that route. So yes, the Pypes system is a little harder to install but there's a nice payoff. Something to think about.

1964-1977 is a bit of a stretch. the 73-77 owners need to dent the RH tailpipe to clear the spring. The 3" system just plain doesn't fit 73-77. As we speak we are working on a 66 Chevelle and designing a side/quarter panel exit tailpipe extension to give the 64-67 owner that oem look. If I might suggest the Pypes Race Pro if you decide to purchase the Pypes system. The Race Pro is the exact same design as the DM Ultraflow and when you purchase the entire system you'll save about a $100 when you're done and get a lifetime warranty. Through Summit it is SGA10R.

Thanks for that info. I thinks that's what I'm going with, but wasn't to sure about the Race Pro mufflers. Is the SGA10 (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=PYE%2DSGA10&FROM=MG), that same as the SGA10R (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=PYE%2DSGA10R&FROM=MG), minus the mufflers? I might just give the Race Pro's a shot thought. Haven't been able to find any bad comments on them

Yes, SGA10 is a muffler delete system. SGA10R includes the mufflers.

Just a heads up! Summit's prices on Pypes products are going up about 10% sometime tomorrow!!!!! They were suppose to go up Jan 1 but Summit extended the prices until now.
