: Headliner Installed Wrong

Some of you might remember my post last week, with pictures, after I gutted my interior in preparation for POR-15, new carpet, and new bucket seats.

I removed every piece of my inerior except the headliner. It appears to be in pretty good shape.
However, whoever installed it put it right over the interior light, so there is now no light in the ceiling of the interior.
I had been thinking, no big deal, I'll just cut a hole in it and install the dome light in it properly.
However, now that I've looked at several interior pictures of 68's, I see that they came with shoulder straps attached to the roof.
Well, my shoulder straps were apparently removed and the attaching brackets have also been covered with the headliner.

I don't know why someone would do such a half baked job with a headliner. So now I'm going to just yank it out and do it properly.
Plus, this way I'll be able to coat the inside of the roof with POR-15 also.

Question...
Would it be worth it to attempt to gently remove the headliner and try to re-use it after I get the dome light and shoulder harnesses installed properly, or should I just start from scratch with a new headliner?

Thanks,
-Greg

Greg you can certainly try re-using your headliner, nothing to lose by trying. I have glued and re-glued headliners trying to get wrinkles out without a problem. The only thing that might be a problem is if the headliner is trimmed so close that you can't get a good hold to re-stretch it. If it doesn't work then you can get a new one.

headliner are not the easiest things to install , if it has no tears i would leave it you can take the sides off and locate the screw holes for your harness, look in the back of the trunk driver side there is where your dome wires start from, if there still up there you can feel out its location, dead center , anyway a new one is 100 buck with the glue, if you por 15 the inside of the top your car will trap condensation, has long has the car is keep reasonably dry it will take 100 years for the rust to eat though to the top,

What is the best glue for headliners? I made several attempts with several different glues. I got the wrinkles out ok, but in a few months they fell. It wasn't on the chevelle, but I want to be ready to do it right when my project gets there.

Forgot: Greg you have a great name!

DAP Weldwood contact cement works great. You can pick it up at almost any hardware store. Like said before, you can undo and restick if needed.

Since your planning on replacing the headliner anyway, I'd try finding those screw holes that are hiding under your current headliner. The dome light lens screw holes shouldn't be to hard to find but the shoulder belt holes might be tougher. see if someone will send you a picture of their 68 wiith the headliner out with a ruler up to the hole locating it from the nearest support rib. Poke around with a needle till you find it. What have you got to loose if you screw it up. I agree with Steve Johnson that it will be hard to stretch it back into shape after it has been trimmed close.
