I have Verizon Fios at home and has worked great for two years. I got home several nights ago and could not get on line with my computer but I can withe the wifes wireless laptop running off the same box. Mine is a desktop and not wireless.

There is a error symbol over the little computer pictures on the lower right. If you click on that is says

"Local area connection 2 status limited or no connectivity. you might not be able to access the internet or somenetwork resorces. This problem occured because the network did not assign a network address to the computer"

below that it says "to restart connection and establish full connnectivity click repair"

If I click repair after a few minutes it says

"windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed.... renewing your IP address"

The operating system is winddows xp home

I can usually fumble my way through this stuff but I am lost on this one

You might have to call your internet provider and have them reset the modem. i had to do that with my 2 wire modem at home.

I had the exact same problem with my home desktop that my Dad gave us. It turned out to be the ethernet card. A quick visit to Tiger Direct, $15.00 later, and it was OK. They are a cheap and easy fix. Daren

What Daren said above. In the meantime, you can reboot the modem by powering it off for a few seconds and that should "refresh" everything for you.

Try a few simple things.
Follow the instructions on this site.
http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/windowsnetworkin1/ht/renewipaddrwxp.htm

If that doesn't help you, then you probably have a defective network card or bad network cable.
Are you seeing a link light on the router and on the network card of the computer itself?

I liked your original idea better... but from MY experience, you should coat the modem liberally with POR 15 first. this way it will crush as one big unit and all the pieces will peel away slowly..:D

of course the safest way would be to do all the above answers first.......

wear a face shield and safety glasses when whacking it with a hammer.. and unplug the unit...

There should also be a reset button on the back of the modem, you need a pen or pencil to push it.

gh,
I have the same problem with my Dell desktop, but it is wireless. It starts acting up every few months even though my Wife's never has a problem. All I have to do is open the cover and take the wireless card out , then put it back in, and it works fine. One of these days I will go buy a new card and see if that fixes it for good. Try doing the same with your network card and see what happens.

did you call the provider of the modem internet company, they are the only ones that can reset your modems passwordI set my modems password all the time. I've always used LinkSys stuff and if you press the reset it resets the modem to default settings and default password - usually admin.

Logic would seem to indicate that if one computer on the network (your wife's) can access the network and another cannot (yours), the answer lies in your computer and probably not the modem - although the Ethernet port on the modem could be at fault. Since you've tried another modem port that can probably be eliminated.

I've found that if you change cards and/or slots, it's best to completely delete the original network connection - Windows doesn't like changes. I've swapped cards several times to make room for additional cards I added and failed to get a connection in the new slot. I'd delete whatever connection you have now showing in Network Connections and running the New Connections wizard.

Did you do those software checks in the link I posted? What was the results of that? Do you have link lights on the computer and modem for the connection? These things should help you diagnose the problem.

I have the link lights and I did delete the card from the system before moving and then replacing the ethernet card.
During all this I have been able to connect 3 times but it never fully connected. Once I got a page up but no pictures come up with it. Just the text. As soon as I tried to refresh it died again.

I did go to the link above but all that was stuff I did before I even made the post here.

I have not called Verizon yet. I was hoping not to have to sit on a phone for an hour waiting for help but looks like that may be what I will be doing when I get home tonight. :(
