: Adding Factory Trunk Light In My 67
Hot66ss Jul 13th, 99, 12:00 AM Okay here is my latest. About 6 months ago I found a 66 trunk light at the local junk yard. I pulled out the light and wiring including that little 3 way looking plug thing where is connects to the trunk harness. I did NOT get any switch or button to detect when the trunk is open to turn the light on, should there be one?? How do I wire this thing in to come on when I open the trunk? How do I wire this stupid thing!! Does cars with trunk light have different wiring harnesses? Are 66 and 67 trunk lights the same?

P.S when you respond please keep in mind i am dumb when it comes to wiring :O

mr409 Jul 13th, 99, 6:42 AM There is a mercury switch built into the light socket. When the lid is raised, it makes contact and lights the light.
There should be a black connector to the left of the driver side trunk hinge. (under quarter panel) Should just be a simple matter of fishing the wire throught the lid and plugging it in.
Good luck,

Hot66ss Jul 14th, 99, 2:53 PM Okay I Just looked back around the trunk and found only one plug. It was the plug where the interior harness hooks into the trunk harness is this the plug im looking for? That plug looks about double as wide as the trunk light plug? will this work? The plug I have is a weird looking double set up.
Thanks for the help

Hot66ss Jul 14th, 99, 8:11 PM Update. I started messing around and started plugging my thing into those wires in the middle of the trunk by the latch. I got it to work but only when the headlight or running light are on. I checked it and this one is the only hot feed unless I have my breaks on or reverse lights. What's the deal? Oh yeah and the one you told me to plug it into does not fit.
Thanks for the help

mr409 Jul 15th, 99, 5:43 AM On all of my cars there is a single wire with a black plug on it.
Perhaps your car doesn't have it???
You would need a constant source of power to make the light work properly.

OK Thomas, I went and played 'refrigerator' with my 67. It has the factory trunk light and works like this.
The headlight switch MUST be on. Either full or just the first detent then the light works when the trunk lid comes up about 6 inches and goes out just before it closes ....hey, it's dark in here! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
Hot66ss Jul 15th, 99, 6:29 PM Thanks guys. here is what I think I'm going to do so I don't have to have my lights on. I think I'm going to wire it from the cab courtesy light harness to inside the trunk to the light. that way it always has power and will come on when I open the trunk. Oh while I'm on the subject of lights. Would a car with a trunk light always have the under dash lights?? I use the 67 as a daily driver and the regular headliner light don't cut it.
Thanks a lot.

Philip Jul 15th, 99, 6:45 PM Just one note, if you wire the light to be hot at all times, and it malfunctions you will end up with a dead battery. According to Murphy's Law it will be at the worst possible time.

Hot66ss Jul 15th, 99, 8:51 PM Hmm Good point. I'll tell you what I might do then is wire it to the cool little lighted switch that I have and when I want the light just flick it on. sound good?
Thanks

Keith Tedford Jul 18th, 99, 1:37 PM Our '67 is an unmolested original and it is as Al says. The trunk light is on a mercury switch but is also tied into the headlight switch which must be on in order for the trunk light to work.
Hot66ss Jul 18th, 99, 11:08 PM I wonder why GM was so dumb to do that?
Thanks
