: Pro Magnum rockers clear valve covers?
Hobart Jun 14th, 04, 5:57 AM Hi guys. I need to go with full roller rockers on my 468, so I was doing a search on what rockers might clear my stock valve covers. Mostly I see people have used the Harland Sharps or Crane Golds and had to use a thicker gasket and do some grinding on the rockers to clear the baffles. I would prefer not to grind, and I was noticing that the Comp Magnum Pro's have a smaller pushrod end. Anyone know if they'll clear? I also see the Crower stainless Enduros are like that, but they're $410 compared to the Comp's being $280; so I'd rather pop for the Comps. Or am I too worried about the grinding - maybe I should just buy the Harlands at about $200? Advice appreciated. By the way, my cam lift is just .555 I & E, so it is not that big of a cam. Thanks to all in advance.
Bob West Jun 14th, 04, 8:41 AM I've only used Crane Energizers and now Crane Golds, with tall valve covers....sorry,no help...I've heard the Harland Sharps are pretty durable.
JRS70LS5 Jun 14th, 04, 11:08 AM I have the harland sharps on my big block with stock valve covers and only had to radius two rocker arms a very small amount, nothing that will affect the rocker arm.
DEEBOO Jun 15th, 04, 9:19 AM I bought the Crane Energizers and had to grind on them for rocker to retainer/spring spring clearance. I will depend on the OD of your springs. My springs were 1.550 OD and the Crane suport springs up to 1.500. The best thing is just buy the Rocker you want and see if they clear, if not get the die grinder and take as little neccessaty to get .040 clearance. It will not affect the rocker ratio or geometry by clearancing the rocker arm underneath the rocker, but don't just grind straight across. Try to get the contour of the springs and retainer.
Hobart Jun 15th, 04, 7:22 PM Thanks guys. Sounds like the Mr Gasket 5/16 gaskets and a set of Harland Sharps with a little grinding on two of them would be the ticket. Thanks for the help, you guys are always the best.
flywheel Jun 15th, 04, 8:16 PM I have the Comp mag's on my 454 with the black GM perf. valve covers only had to trim down the lock nut on the exhuast side rockers to get to fit.The machine shop did it with my motor build at no cost :D

jakeshoe Jun 16th, 04, 1:55 AM Pro-Mags will clear with a 5/16" gasket, HS will not.
The extra money for the Pro-Mags is well spent as one valvetrain failure (bent or broke pushrod, loose rocker stud, whatever), and you will be buying a single HS for $27 each. The Comps will usually live.
DougA Jun 16th, 04, 8:53 AM For what its worth I have the crane gold and they clear a stock valve cover but I do not have drippers.
Hobart Jun 16th, 04, 4:27 PM Thanks to all. Maybe I shouldn't cheap out with the HS's and buy the Pro-Mags instead, and not have to do any grinding. Hmmm, I'll have to ponder this. I also see that Felpro offers a 5/16 gasket with a steel core, I'll bet that's a little better than the Mr Gasket jobber. Decisions, decisions...
Hobart Jul 4th, 04, 12:18 AM Figured I'd update you all on what I did. Ended up popping for the Comp Pro-Magnums ($280 from Summit). They fit under the stock non-dripper covers with no grinding or baffle mods; but I needed to use the Fel-Pro 5/16 thick gaskets to clear the poly-locks. Worked perfect, and the rockers look like real nice pieces. Thanks again for all of your input.
