: Will tranny choice affect my cam choice?

Hi all, if you remember from this post, http://www.chevelles.com/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi/topic/4/23429.html?, I was going to choice the Muncie 5-speed as my tranny. It seems now that it won't be out until fall, and while I would like to wait, I don't think I can that long, because it would mean I wouldn't be able to finish my project until probably Christmas of next year. I do not mind cutting a hole in my tranny tunnel if I can still get a good, fun manual tranny with a nice OD like the Muncie 5 was offering. First off, I was looking at the Tremec TKO-500 and the TKO-600 (the 600 with the .64OD). I'm not sure how to figure out which gear combo works nicely with rear-end and stuff, so I was wondering if one of those looks good, OR if there are other trannies with a nice OD like that work in a daily driver with 4.10 gears that can handle the 454. Also, will a change in gear ratios/tranny affect my cam choice?? Or is that just a thing with auto trannies and stall converters...

Thanks everyone!

There are plenty of gear calculators out there.
I think one is on the TCI site AWA Pat Kelley's.

Big cams won't run at 1800 rpm in OD very well.

You need to decide on your cam 1st, then match the gears. If the match is less than desireable you either change cams/gears or live with it.

Thanks for the advice. I've pretty much decided on the cam but that was with a different tranny with different gear ratios, although the OD was the same, or maybe 4 one-hundredths of a difference.

The only problem with running a gear calculator myself is I still don't know what the numbers mean..

Oh, and thanks for the tip. I didn't forget about the driveshaft thing, I'm looking into that too. I'll probably have to get a new one anyway so it will be a good thing to make sure is right. Thanks.

1st times RG shoot for mid 9's to 10.0.
OD times RG, shoot for a comfortable rpm at 60mph.
ex. .62 x 4.10 = 2.54 final. Put that # in the gear calc. Should be around 2k @ 60 w/ 26" tire.
Or 70 if you live in the sticks....or freeway a lot. 4.10, 4spd and 45 mph are quite easy in the city. Depends on your tolerance. Some people don't mind 3200 at 70 on the freeway for hours.
Drives me nuts... I think I could get used to my 276/284 at 3000 pretty easy. Till I get the gas bill.

My First Gen. car's L-48 350 motor, 12 bolt, 3.31's and stock 25.3" to 25.5" tall tires with my M-20 put me right at 3050 to 3100 at 70mph when it was new so please go from there b/c that was the way GM made it to run from the git-go..

And yes, nowadays gas is too high to feed it. It got right at 17 mpg at 70 new justa cruising along!! -929 cam and all.........
