Looking to purchase a 67 L79 Elcamino. Car was bulit in Sept. 66. Car has the POP and 3 owner history. The stamp on the engine pad matches the POP ( VO825ER) the stamp on the trans(P7P13)rear(CF0915B)

There is no vin stamp on the block(top pad or near fliter) and no vin stamp on the trans.

Is this possible? Very early vin car.

While most smallblocks did not get VIN stamps until 1968, L79s were usually stamped as well as all big blocks. However, I am also aware of a 66 El Camino with a 396 built in January at Fremont with an obvious original engine that does not have a VIN stamp on the block. I have heard this is not unusual for Fremont which produced mostly trucks and did not require the VIN stamps (so I've heard). The El Camino was considered a truck, although built on the same assembly line with Chevelles (I am assuming). I wouldn't worry about a missing VIN stamp on a Fremont El Camino. Another reason could be that L79s were not installed in 66 Chevelles or El Caminos so stamping of any small blocks had not been a requirement for the past year. It would have been easy to miss a L79 built early in the 67 model year.

Fremont built GM A-Body's, it built Chevy, Olds, Pontiac, Buick.

While the El Camino is technically a truck it is built on a Chevelle Station Wagon platform and is built on the car lines.

CON VIN stamped on engine, Trans, frame and body was optional on 67 and prior years. It was normally placed on hi-perf extra cost engines by Chevrolet but its not consistent. 1968 is was a federal law that auto mfg's had to used a method to trace these assembly's to deter criminal enterprises.

Thanks guys. The car is very clean with only a few mods over the years. The radiator, alternator and brackets are gone. The smog is off the car, but comes with the car. Wrong wheels, p/s added, Wrong air cleaner lid, correct base.Cool color, Royal Plum. I spoke with the original owner which was neat. The car has been in the same town it's entire life. I will try to post a few pics. Thanks again. If anyone else has more insight on the vins. please let me know.
