: 502 blower cam -- your thoughts
supersport6667 Dec 29th, 04, 7:36 PM Have a chance to pickup a cam for a fair price and just wanted your thoughts on the numbers. The motor is a marine 502, 8.75cc, Sq ports 2.19/1.88, with B&M 174 blower, going to run the motor in a 66/67 chevelle, max rpm 6000-6500. The cam is a solid roller L/S 114, duration @050 is 234/253 with 595/620 lift. Cam pulled hard to 7000rpm in a blown 427, so it should pull to 6500 or so in the bigger 502. The valve lash hot is suppossed to be .010 to be easier on valve train for street use, cam was custom ground for a street car and is a steel billet cam but can be run with cast dist gear. Any thoughts????? THANX
camcojb Dec 29th, 04, 10:29 PM Are you sure on the .050 duration numbers? Seems like a big split to me. Make sure to use a melonized dist gear, do not use the new MSD gears, they're having issues.

SS454JC Dec 30th, 04, 12:10 PM Hello,
I have 174 B&M on 468 with 1966 square port, closed chamber steel heads. B&M manifold is not ported to match. Manifold still has tiny ports. Using a Crane Commander, flat tappet hyd .553/.571 lift, 236/246 @ .050..........love it. Installed the cam straight up, which is 5 degrees advanced per Crane. Car runs fantastic. All steel 1970 convertible, 5 spd Doug Nash. Pulls like there is no tomorrow. Virtually impossible to drive with street tires.
With more cubes, the 174, and the cam you are describing, it should idle decent, sound choppy, and be a blast to drive.
By the way....using an old 850 double pumper with only primary idle adjusters. Works great. I tweaked the position set screw of the secondary butterflies to let more air in, and the primary idle adjusters work fine. Did not have to drill holes in primary or secondary butterflies. Totally stock carb with 8.5 power valves installed and 83 square jetting.
What carb are you going to use? Curious. Thanks.
Good luck...Joe
supersport6667 Dec 30th, 04, 12:39 PM I actually have the same crane cam, but was thinking of upgrading before motor goes together. How many r's are U turning your 454 with the crane cam???? If the motor goes in my 66, I will run a doug nash 5speed also( my 67 is an auto). I still have the 850DP that came of the 454 motor the blower was on originally, bought motor with a dropped valve for the blower. I have a barry grant 1030cfm I was going to use on the 502. I should probably just stick to the crane cam......the motor should still make more HP than I would know what to do with. I friend had basically the same 502 with 174 blower with hyd roller 540 lift 115 C/L and it made just over 700HP on dyno
SS454JC Dec 30th, 04, 1:58 PM Hello,
No need to push RPM beyond 6000 with my setup.
By the way.....for the lower crank pulley, I recently swapped out the B&M 6 inch (6 rib) for a Weiend 7 inch (6 rib). Rotates the blower a little faster. What the heck. HA HA.
With 3:30 rear, hyd cam and faster spinning blower....I keep it to 6000.
Have fun! Joe
supersport6667 Jan 1st, 05, 2:10 PM Think I'll look into the bigger weiand pulley with the bigger motor. Who did U get the pulley thourgh and do U by chance have the part#.......THANX AGAIN
SS454JC Jan 1st, 05, 7:42 PM Hello,
http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/Products/AMS/SC/SCPA/PSl-s-Pulleys.html
Weiand 6 rib for Long Style water pump, p/n 6723 is the one I bought from Summit Racing for about $148.
Use this link for Summit....select Weiand product, part number 6723.

By using the Weiand 7 inch pulley, it made my belt very tight against the idler pulley. Hopefully providing less chance for belt slip.
Good luck, Joe
