: 66 chevelle cross member
Beav Jr Feb 28th, 08, 10:52 PM Okay I know there is a lot of talk about the cross member on a 66 chevelle having to be slid back but is there any difference in the height of the transmission mount that is welded on the cross members? From powerglide, 350, 400, muncies, any tranny that was put in the 66 chevelle 2 hard top.
Thanks to all!!!!
Beav:beers:
eric13617 Feb 28th, 08, 11:44 PM A Powerglide and 350 turbo's are the same length, hence, the crossmember won't have to be moved.A 400 is ,I think, two inches longer to the transmission mount, which requires the crossmember to be slid back.Sorry, don't know about the sticks. The motor mounts dictate the down angle of the trans. And,I don't know for sure, but,I think all of the trans. mounts are the same thickness. I think my 67 has 6 holes in the frame for the trans.crossmember.
I do know however, that if the angle is wrong,or off too much, the bellhousing will break, eventually.
Pete 67 Feb 29th, 08, 2:36 AM I am pretty sure that both the crossmember & the mount for TH400's are different than their PG & TH350 cousins.
As I am sure you are aware, a TH400 was not available until the 1967 model year, so you may want to confirm that you have the proper pieces.
And one last thing to be aware of, the mount is not welded to the crossmember. The mount is bolted to the bottom of the tranny, & then two bolts attach it to the crossmember.
Beav Jr Feb 29th, 08, 8:28 AM the part that I was talking about being welded was the plate on the the cross member that the tranny mount sits on and bolts too. The reason I am asking this question is because I am putting a new tremec 5 spd in and it just seems a little too tight in some places where the the cut out template won't be cutting. I have the cross member in but the tranny is real tight against the tunnel. I just want to make sure that there isn't any difference in the mount plate height on the cross members before I go cutting this beautiful floor!!!
Thanks, Beav
Rick Bandy Feb 29th, 08, 9:45 AM I had the same problem where my muncie was very tight. A friend who welds for a living dropped the mount 3/4 on an inch and now all is well.
Beav Jr Mar 11th, 08, 6:31 PM Thanks to all for the help. I got the 5 spd installed and it looks pretty dang good. I had to cut the heck out of a great looking floor but with the sheet metal that comes with the tranny it turned out good. I had to slide the cross member back about 1-1/2" and then you only need to drill one hole in the frame on each side or you could drill another hole in the crossmember itself on each side since there is already some different hole locations on the frame.

gibbons Mar 12th, 08, 5:47 PM Hey Beav, did you do a CC5S kit? My tunnel patch is kinda teetering on the center cover on the trans. I am going to lower the cross member tonge 9/16" so that the TKO shaft will be the same height as the TH400 was. I am hoping that will help with the patch clearance. If yours was a CC5S, did it contact nicely at the front and rear patch edges?
Beav Jr Mar 12th, 08, 6:13 PM I bought the TKO 600 kit from keisler engineering. It came with 2 patch panels, one big one in front of the 4 spd hole and one little one behind the hole. It said once I got the 2 holes cut to then cut each way from the front of the 4 speed hole into the big hole and from the rear of the 4 speed hole into the little hole. Then to open the gap between the two sides of the 4spd hump up to between 3/4" to 1". I screwed everything together then test fit it, and then unscrewed it and used some 3M 2 part epoxy and glued it down with the screws holding it until it set up. As soon as I get a chance I am going to try to post some pics. I didn't like the idea of cutting the heck out of my floor but I guess I will just have to get over it.
Thanks, Beav
Beav Jr Apr 5th, 08, 10:31 AM Hey everyone, I was going to put some pics of the tranny install but I couldn't figure out how to put the pics on the site. If anyone cares to see them just email me and I can send them to you. Or if some one can explain to me how to post them on here go ahead and do so I will try to figure it out. my email is thebeavman@iowatelecom.net
C YA's,
