: Mali2ude going together for Power Tour 08
camcojb May 14th, 08, 10:35 AM Jody,
I also have the tall AFX spindle and the larger diameter Hotchkis sway bar. The steering box has the stock swing. The sway bar clearance is the limit on my setup, not the inner fender well. With 18x8 and 5.5 bs, you'll be 0.5 closer to the sway bar. I think it will work. Also had a problem finding a wheel that cleared the C5 calipers without a spacer. Tried a few.
what's weird is the 17's from Vintage wheel cleared easily, but I have heard of people having problems with 18's. The extra bs will allow me to back off the camber a bit and still clear the outer wheelwell. If it rubs the swaybar at full lock I can live with it, or tune it a bit with a small spacer.
Jody
Joel642DRpost May 14th, 08, 12:02 PM I purchased 17x7's with 245 all the way around. 4'' bs on the front/17x8 4.5 on the rear. I also have 2 inch drop spindles. Stock sway bar. Will I also run into problems? I dont have the chassis back to a roller yet. Rims and tires not mounted yet. Please let me know. It's for a 64 chevelle also. Thanks Guys

you may depending on how low the car is up front. Should clear though, it's 1/4" further in than mine which would have helped. Does the lowered spindle change your track width? Many do, and if it increases it then that would be a problem.
camcojb May 14th, 08, 5:15 PM Jody,
Are you keeping a 245 width tire with the new front wheels or switching to something else? What was the deal breaker with the old setup...tire rubbing on something? Wheel hitting suspension parts?
Just trying to learn what to look out for when I start modding my car.
I am dropping back to a 235, but the 245 will definitely fit with the right wheel. The problem was the most offset I could get was 4.75" on the 8" rim, and I need 5.25" on my car with my ride height and a 245 tire. You could not turn the wheel 15 degrees without rubbing, and that was sitting still. Would have been much worse driving it down the road.

Joel642DRpost May 15th, 08, 9:59 AM Thank you, For the info Camcojb. I not to sure about the track width. This is the first frame off for me. Man, At time it seems it been one thing after the other. I hope they work. I should Know in the next month or so. Again thanks for the help.
camcojb May 15th, 08, 1:03 PM Took a couple of pics of the Recaro drivers seat; still waiting on the passenger bracket. This was the first thing in a long while that bolted on without mods, amazing. :clonk:
I had Shawn Katt with Gearhead Garage recover them to match the rear seat. At the time we were doing an old-school look so I had him remove the headrests, but after Power Tour I'm going to get them back to him to put them back on.
Thanks again to Terry at Griffin Motorwerke for the brackets (also where I bought the seats). Something fit...............

Bad66Chevelle454 May 15th, 08, 2:31 PM This car is just amazing. Its for sure going to be on the cover of some magazine. I love the new modern performance, but still keeping a lot of things original, or close to it. The best of both worlds!

camcojb May 19th, 08, 1:13 AM well, finished up the a/c lines the other day, and replaced my Hotchkis uca's with some from Mark at SC&C. Needed Marks as I had no room for camber adjustment with the downtubes from the turbos. Nice stuff, did a quick alignment and will finalize when the wheels and tires arrive Wednesday.

yeah, I tried to keep it simple. I will not do a twin turbo next time if that is still my goal......................... :clonk:
Jody
BB_Mike May 20th, 08, 10:54 AM Does that mean just single turbo. ;)
I have no idea how I am going to get a 4" exhaust pipe past the firewall. Might just go oval and exit out the side
camcojb May 20th, 08, 8:40 PM tires and wheels showed up today. Let me just publicly thank Frank from GP Superstore and Scott from Forgeline; both went out of their way to take care of me, excellent communication throughout. It was a pleasure.
Here's a couple pics. I will take some nicer outside pics probably tomorrow, I need to re-do the alignment before taking it for a spin. Rears are 19X11" with 305/30 Michelins and the fronts are 18X8" with 235/40's.
Here's the first wheel/tire mounted with the original wheel/tire combo up front.

Gokou May 20th, 08, 10:17 PM Interesting... the milled accents really help keep the black centers from "disappearing" into the side of the car.
I will say this-- I like them better than I thought I would, I was expecting them to have too much "bling" for the subtle gray of the paint. They're much less distracting than I thought they would be... I think the same wheels but in Forgeline's default "gunmetal" finish and hidden bolts would have been the best choice but the time limitation made that choice for you.
Jody, are you going to be around Friday or this weekend? I might want to swing by...

camcojb May 21st, 08, 11:04 PM well, finished up everything except the springs, so I moved the car out of the shop under it's own power for the first time. Took a few pics, not good lighting, but figured I'd share anyway. I promise to get better ones in the next few days.

How is the clearance on the new front wheels and tires? They are a big improvement on looks over the previous set. I can't believe how fast you put that car together. I'm still working on the electrical.

tire clearance is great, but the front of the car will have to come up for trans pan clearance. It's only 3.5" off the ground or so, and that's not going to work.

Shovel99 May 22nd, 08, 10:07 AM Jody,
Two questions:
1) What trans are you using in the car (sorry if I missed it somewhere, but I read the entire thread and didn't see anything on it).
2) What did you have on the '07 Power Tour? My girlfriend and I 'Long Hauled' in an Orange '84 GMC shortbed PU in '07 and was just curious as to if we crossed paths!
BTW, your car looks phenomenal!! Great job!
Thanks,
JP

I'm running a 4L80E with a Twist Machine paddle shifter and PCS controller. In 07 a friend and I shared rides with Mark Stielows Camaro X (white 69 Camaro) and the Red Witch (red 67 Camaro).

64chevlle May 22nd, 08, 9:45 PM Jody very nice car, maybe we will meet up on the power tour somewhere?
Brian
dand38s May 22nd, 08, 10:33 PM Very nice car. I cannot wait to see it on the Power Tour. Maybe we can get a group of 64's together for a few pictures. Of course yours and 64 Chevlle's will make mine look very plain.
camcojb May 23rd, 08, 9:27 PM well, it's not looking good for Power Tour, as this damned car is fighting and screaming till the very end. As soon as I solve one issue two more crop up. I think I'll run out of time.
Right now, no speedo and related, no trans shifting. VSS issue I'd guess, but not sure how to solve it yet. Then as it was idling all of a sudden both pipes started smoking a lot. My guess, oil from the turbo drains backing up or just too much oil period. I have a ported pump on this thing and about 45 psi at idle, maybe it's just too much. The drain lines are 5/8" i.d. and are kink-free downhill to the pan. It's run this long before and never done this, but of course it starts now. I have the proper oil restrictor fittings Precision supplied with the turbos, so I dunno........... :(
Haven't driven it more than 200 ft without some major issue cropping up like my valve covers melting.............. :) which of course caused a massive oil leak that drenched everything. Not the fault of the covers, I'm going to run the same ones on another LS build, just not on a turbo car with the headers right next to the covers. Everybody with them on normal motors have not had any issues, great pieces.
So as you see, I've got several big things to sort out, and honestly I'm burnt out on this car. It will get sorted, but I really set my goal of one month for teething pains; one week may not be enough.
Jody
dand38s May 24th, 08, 12:25 AM Man, that sucks.:( Maybe things will start looking up this weekend. I was really looking forward to seeing your car in person.

not over yet, I'll keep working on it until it's done. Just filling everyone in on where I am, which is kind of a tight spot right now.

camcojb May 24th, 08, 11:59 PM looks very good jody I se hope ou get your few problems fixed. good luck mr.:beers:
thanks, think I'm on the right track. Too much oil pressure at idle, need to restrict it further. Smoke is only at idle, now going to try to find something to restrict the oil pressure down.
Jody
wills65 May 25th, 08, 2:41 AM trouble or not, this is still the baddest Malibu I have ever seen. Car is looking great man, hope you get these issues sorted out. great things are seldom achieved without great pains in the a$$! keep it up though its awesome
daveseitz May 25th, 08, 7:54 AM Jody, that car is so nicely designed in ALL Respects period. If you need to take a month off just to catch your breath, everyone would understand. You really know how to blend things together so the entire package is beautiful. You have done the car world proud by getting this together as fast and beautifully as it is.

Jody
camcojb May 25th, 08, 5:55 PM well, barring a miracle from Precision Turbo on Tuesday the car ain't gonna make Power Tour this year. http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/sign/sign0181.gif (http://www.mysmiley.net) I just finished pulling the turbo, no obvious signs of oil leakage. But it's positively coming from that turbo somehow, as the plugs are spotless, there is no other way to get oil into that pipe.
I've had e-mails suggesting to just not idle for any period of time, but on Power Tour you might have 1-2 hours of idling/slow moving to get into a particular venue. So your cooling system better be up to task, and the car better not smoke...........
It's been real and it's been fun updating the thread, but it hasn't been real fun................ :DThanks for all the comments, and I'll let you know Tuesday what's happening.
BB_Mike May 25th, 08, 11:44 PM So your brand new ball bearing PT unit has an oil seal that is leaking into the exhaust? Wow. Perhaps the oil direction into the turbo got swapped and it ate itself?
Thanks for sharing the sadder parts of this experience. I'd be interested to know how Precision handles this. A guy I know is having a hard time getting a turbo repaired from Garret. He hooked up his oil lines backwards on the remote oil filter setup and damaged a lot more than the center cartridge!

I'm not putting all the blame on their turbo; I have fairly high oil pressure at idle with the ported pump (about 35 psi hot) and that coupled with a ring/seal on the turbo that's probably on the outer edge of being in spec is likely the issue. Get the turbo moving like cruising down the road and it's fine, but at idle the turbo doesn't help the oil direct itself down the drain like it does at higher speeds.
Jody
camcojb May 27th, 08, 11:25 AM well, it's not going to happen. Just spoke with Precision and they do not stock this particular turbo and it would take a few days to assemble one. I wanted to thank all you guys for the feedback and support, it made the build and updates on the board a lot of fun. :beers:
I did just get a call from a good friend and it seems he just bought Camaro X from Mark Stielow and wants me to drive it on Power Tour, so I guess I'm still going................ ;)

Mike Culpepper Jun 16th, 08, 11:05 PM Camcojb,
Newbie here. The car is stunning, but I'd like to know what lift that is; make and model. I'm just about finished with plans to turn my one car garage into an oversized two car garage and was thinking of a two-post lift in order to lift the body off my '71 convertible, but how you did it makes more sense from the point of view of also using the lift for long term storage. Gotta put the other car somewhere and my wife has claimed a spot inside for her daily driver.

No, it's a full RTM (resin transfer molded) Carbon Fiber dash from Carbon Components. The 64-65 carbon fiber dash inserts were a "stock" item several years ago from Carbon Components, now all they typically make is valve covers. I believe Dave (the owner) still has the mold for the 64-65 dash insert and can still make them on request.
He also made bitchin' carbon upper and lower 14" air cleaner assemblies-- I used to have one when I was still running a carb. It lives on a friend's car now.

Dave doesn't deal direct, but John is a dealer and can be reached at http://www.carbonfibervalvecovers.com/carbonvc.htm
They don't show the dash on that site, but Dave can do it and John at the link can get you a price. It was already in the car when I bought it or I'd tell you what I paid.

Also, Which inner cooler did you purchase? Where did you get it from?

spindles are the tall AFX spindles from ATS. The brakes are 13" C5 stuff from Baer/Touring Classics. The lower a-arms are from Hotchkis; had their uppers too, but had to swap them to some from SC&C to have enough downpipe clearance.
The intercooler was custom made By Mark Stielow and/or Wheel 2 Wheel.

Moog Chevelle lowers and B car uppers, only because it had B car spindles on there before and I had planned on keeping the Hotchkis uppers which had the b-car ball joints already in them.

I had those carbon fiber inserts custom made from http://www.wabbitsww.com/
If you have the same console he has the masters to do it again. Thanks.

lowpro71 Aug 11th, 08, 8:12 PM First off I have to say this car is much more stunning the second time around. Your recreation of the this car is absolutly amazing. I am putting 64 malibu together myself and wanted to know how the vintage ac controller was mounted in the stock location? I saw the write up on it in popular hot rodding and was using Marks build as a bucket of ideas for my car. I cant locate the issue when Mark was doing the AC so I am just reaching out for a little helpful info.

thanks a lot. It appears he removed the stock unit and then built a framework that duplicated it, and mounted the VA unit in it's place. I can ask him the end of the month, he's flying out for a track day. Or if I get real ambitious I could remove it and take some pics............ ;)

Jody,
I looked all over the LizardSkin website for bed liner but couldn't find it. Is the product you used the insulator or the sound deadener? Also which Wurth product did you use in the fenderwells?
Thanks for the info, great car, incredible work and love the details...it's all in the details!

probably because I'm an idiot................. :p. It was Raptor Liner, knew it was some sort of animal......... :D
We had already sprayed the liner on the entire bottom of the car, and I didn't want something quite so thick for the front wheelwells for fitment reasons. So I used the Wurth spray on undercoat. Used it in the past, it lays out so much nicer than the cheap undercoating you get at the auto parts stores. You usually need to go to a auto paint supply place to find it, or you can order it online.

Chicken Coupe Aug 13th, 08, 3:06 PM That's funny!
What did you use to apply the Raptor product a schutz(?) sprayer, or roller. You've got a great "light" texture in the photos.
Thanks in advance!

The Raptor bed liner was applied with a gun by the painter over at my shop. I was going to do it, but he wanted to do it, so I definitely didn't argue.......... :D It's just a bit messy, so I was glad I spent extra time masking and protecting the walls and floors of the shop.

the 17 X 11's (and the current 19 X 11's) fit easily, but the car has been mini-tubbed 3" per side.

zachery calligan Aug 31st, 08, 4:56 PM I posting in my sons name he is 14 we just got him a 70 Chevelle and want to narrow the rear and the chassis. I have been looking at the Z notch you mentioned Mark Stielow fabricated the chassis I'm thinking this is what we would like to do to my sons car. Do you have a email address or phone number I could reach him.I think this design will be more cost effective and a better ride for my son.
ed1le Dec 8th, 08, 3:41 PM Beautiful car!
