My little brother just picked up a complete 400 small block from a 72 Impala. It is for his 68 Chevelle. It does need a complete rebuild. My question is would it be OK to just rebuild the factory rods or do you think it would be a better decision to buy new 5.7 or 6.0 rods. This is just for a fun street car and a little fun at the track. He will be running 3.08 gears and a TH-350 trans, and a pair of used Brodix Pro-8 heads. Thank you. graemlins/beers.gif

I'm not Mike, but IMHO, I would step up to at least the 5.7 rods...and for what you can get some Scat 5.7's from Mike, well worth it IMHO. :D

Matt,
The stock rods will work fine but for the price of rods now I usually don't bother rebuilding the stock rods.
I prefer to start with a rod that doesn't have an unknown milion cycles on it. ;)
By the time you buy a set of good bolts & have them redone you have spent about half what a new set of the bushed capscrew rods cost.
You are going to be buying pistons either way so the only difference is the price of the rods.
If you email me I can give you a pretty fair price on the 5.7 Scat's
