Hello All, I have been reading the boards for a while and am looking for feedback on my engine in the works. This will be going in my 65' chevelle in place of a tired 283. Below are the specs...

427 (.060) over (Studed two bolt)
781 large ovals with 2.19 1.88 valves 118cc
Quench .041
SRP 10.13 comp with 118cc heads
Eagle 7/16 Rods
Steel crank
Comp Cams XS274S-10 (Solid Flat Tappet)
(Int. .568, Ext. .578) Dur 274, 280
Air Gap Intake
Comp Headers 2" primaries
Demon 750 Dbl pumper

I'm hoping for between 450 to 500hp and 500 ft. lbs. of torque. :D

No, but my cam is similar ( 276/284) and you should easily hit your HP goal, while I don't know about TQ. Never dyno'd, am only estimating HP from trap speed and a assumed 3800 lbs weight. Looks like a freckle over 500. Yours should be same, maybe better with the smaller heads.

If I missed the info sorry, but IMHO , there is nothing with as high a fun-factor than a solid cam 427/4 speed engine/tranny combo! You can hit the go pedal at 2500 rpm and run it up to 6500+, or you can hit the go pedal at 5000 rpm and still get to wind it out.

Just make sure to build it right. Forged crank, good rods, forged pistons and a balance.

Watch out for hood to carb clearance with that intake.I put a performer rpm on my 65 with a big block in it and ended up with 3" between stock hood and air horn gasket surface.

What air cleaner did you end up using and what size filter. I know I will have to use a drop base and probably between a 2"-3" filter. :(

I'm still working that out.[thank god it's winter] K&N makes 13/16 and 1 1/4 drop base air cleaners. As far as filter thickness, you also need clearance at choke tower for the lid. I'd rather not use a torker, but that will fit. Anyone else go through this?

Fortunately I won’t be using a carb with the choke tower (Mighty Demon probably). Keep me posted on the air cleaner and I will do the same if I get there first. Thanks… graemlins/beers.gif

cromedss,

It looks like you've got a real nice combination. Not too radical so you can actually us it, but still have lots of fun. The hood clearance is going to be tight. You really should have at least 2" above the top of the air cleaner ring as a minimum, although more is better. If you have any questions on getting the carb tuned in please let us know.
