Hello!

I 'm a chevelle lover,owned a 67 & 69 in the past I couldn't find a good one in my price range.
I got a good deal on a 66 belair 2dr post so I went for it.

I need to pick a cam for my project, I'm almost ready to start buying parts.
I have seached the achives for months now but I thought I would like to here something for my personal project.
I would like to have a solid liter camshaft...will consider hydraulic
Thinking about 402A3LUN112 & 302A8LUN110
Would like to see other options, I would like to run 12.00@115

Car and driveline:
66 belair 2 dr post 3950-4050 lbs (best guess)
3.55 Gears and turbo 400 10' “tight” converter 3k stall

For a 496 with 10:19 – 10:53:1 cr (not finish heads)
waiting for cam to set dcr. (8.0-8.1) not in stone.
I'm looking for 580-600 tq /530-550 h.p.@5500 rpm (shift@5800 rpm)

Wheels:
235-60-15 15x7 3.5 b.s.
275-60-15 15x8 4.5 b.s

Usage:
I will probably drive it about 3-6k a year ,off days & weekends, maybe to work sometimes. Its a fun car, stress relieve car, Power Steering only
I want a wicked idle, just no stalling 95% street 5% strip (couple times a year)

Heads:
Merlin ovals 269cc, AFR 265cc, AFR 305cc,781,049 (undecided)

Engine Specs:
Bore: 4.310
Chamber Volume: 115-119cc (Adjusable)
Head Gasket :.039in
Head Gasket Bore: 4.370
Deck: .000
Pistons: Srp 142991 18cc
Stroke: 4.25
Rods: 6.385
Vic Jr or Edelbrock rpm (undecided)
Demon 850chm Carb.

Thanks In Advance!!!!!

Darrell, keep in mind that there not much gear or converter here. I would defintely choose smaller port heads for this application.

I'd keep the compression to the lower end of your stated range for cam compatibility. I would use the same grind I run ( which is quite wicked in a 427!), the Lunati 402A3 you mention. DO NOT get it done on a 112 lsa, keep the 110 lsa for a bit rattier idle and better midrange peak power. In fact, you might even consider asking the folks at Lunati about a 108 lsa version of it for pure wickedness!

Lunati has a new line of cams coming out, the Vodoo line, that Harold designed, but ( shhhh!), I don;t know if its a marketing thing or if they are indeed better, but I would think the 402A3 grind is very hard to improve on.

I went with the EDM'd oil hole in the lifters ( off-the-shelf Cranes) for a little added advantage in durability.

While that cam is good for 7000 in a big port 427, I'd guess it would give you a useable range to 6400-6300 maybe in a oval port 496. Very much a "mid-range" cam in a 496. Matches your 5800 shift point well.

It'll SCA-REW! Even with the 4000 lbs Belair and mild 3.55 gear set.

In heavy apps, you want that cam to come on right at the stall, no higher, so IMHO, I'd err on the "smallish" side.

The 403A2 is a small oval track race grind. Very streetable. Exceptional power.
You've done your homework!

Welcome to Team Chevelle!

The sim. of my 496" motor through D2K gives an estimated 551hp at 5500rpm and 579t at 4500 rpm with no more then new Merlin ovals, about 9.8 to 1 CR., a good old CC 282S grunt solid cam, small, four tube, long open headers and a rebuilt 3310-2 tuned to it and a single plane Strip Dom. intake.

IT really doesn't take much at all to get what you want out of a warmed over 496" motor, imho..
