I was just curious what they nail you for taxes or tarriffs or whatever you call it on parts you purchase, like off of ebay?

Thanks,
Steve

5% if its over $75.00 sent by USPS

5% on everything if it comes any way other than USPS

GST Federal tax 5%
Pst Provincial tax 8 or 7%
Duty on anything not made in North America (NAFTA) is ridiculously high and am not sure what %. I really don't want to think too much about what is spent on the car, it makes my head hurt.
Quite often I get charged nothing. Either it's because we give a good Christmas tip to the mailman or they are too lazy to do the paperwork.
Devaluing the worth of what is shipped from the US can be a big favor for us.

Thanks Chris. I forgot about the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) because we do not have that here in Alberta.

Thats interesting, I guess then USPS is the preferred method of shipping for you guys up there?? Or is UPS better, aside from the added 5% for the lower priced items?

Anything up to 60 lbs is best via USPS.
UPS charges through the nose for brokerage. The Post office is between 5-8$$

any more if i pick it up over there they don't ding you for tax (12%) unless its over $500. There is no other fee any longer. If you have it shipped you could get a nasty "brokerage fee" charge. USPS is the best and if you can when it gets shipped have the shipper mark "gift" on the green tag.

for Customs charges you usually pay i think 30% of the declared value. whenever i would get something in the mailed declared i would get fisted for taxes (then customs opens it of course). for us canadians, UPS is poison, they over charge on what customs charge, and overall havent had 1 good transaction with them. i always go with USPS, the best for us in my mind...

cardude why from CA. when there are many closer dealers??? If you can use a US address and pick up that will work in your favor. If not be careful or find a Canadian supplier.

There isn't a US border all that close to PEI :) I would agree though to use a closer supplier for the big stuff mentioned.

I called a place called matts classic bowties in CA. I was actually able to talk to someone on the phone and not like the big companies where you get dial 1 for BS, dial 2 to go back to main menu etc. Anyways here are prices for 66 parts...

7 piece trunk...$169
rear bumper...$159
Driver side front floor pan...$54
Door skins ...$128 each
Hood stops...$9.50

Shipping is $295 to my door.

I was not aware of these high brokerage fees,so now I am undecided what to do.The 7 piece trunk alone is $375 plus gst and shipping at Early,Birds in Toronto. Does anyone know what would be my best move?

I believe Matt answers the phone there at MCB. Good guy. I have gotten a lot of my camaro stuff from him. Cheaper shipping than the supplier he uses (even on drop shipments).

You might check shipping from an east coast supplier like our sponsor www.ss396.com

Let me tell you my story.

Last spring I had a replacement master cylinder unit from the right stuff. I asked them to ship it and mark it as "warranty replacement antique car parts". It was sent UPS and marked as such with a value of 0 dollars. Well not only did it take three weeks to get to me from the USA here in Toronto, but UPS TOTALLY screwed up the order. First, when it hit the border, they contacted Right Stuff and verified the actual value of the items sent which as written on the shipping manifest as a value of around 350 bucks but that it was a warranty replacement. They then wrote on the shipping manifest/receipt that it had a value of $1960. They call me to pick up the package and when I get there I am informed I owe $470 in Customs/Taxes/Duties/Brokerage fees. Needless to say I was shocked. I try talking to the manager at the shipping depot and he just refuses to help. He says pay or the item gets sent back. In his eyes the writing on the invoice has the actual value of 1960 bucks and thats what he is going by. I spent over three hours there on the phone with their head office on the east coast. Finally the problem was rectified so that the value was 350 bucks. I still owed about 75 bucks so I paid it and left. Of that they charged me a 35 dollar brokerage fee and the rest was taxes/duty.

I refused to give in and will NEVER deal with UPS again. I have used them a couple of times when shipping items and also recieved a couple of items via them and ALWAYS had problems each time. Each time, I felt like I had been bent over and had a large fist shoved up my anus. They charge the highest brokerage fee and NEVER get the paperwork or charges right. I also remember awhile ago that one of the threads had something about the amount of damaged items received when shipped UPS.

Nothing about UPS surprises me anymore.

A buddy of mine bought a quad from the US .When it got here they called him to see if he had a broker. Can you get your own broker? Is it worth the trouble?
