I remember not too long after I joined here I asked the question if anyone let their kids drive their Chevelles.

So I figured it's been almost a year ,near as I can tell, and I figured there would be a few more people sharing their oppinion.

So, do you let your kids drive your Chevelles, or any other classic cars you own?

No I don't. But at 7 years old, she is much better off on her new Trek bicycle anyways.;)

Sure - the day I got it - The day I brought mine home I unloaded off the trailer, pulled it into the driveway and parked. As I went in to tell my wife to come out, both kids ran past me to jump in the car. The younger one, was 4 at the time and she jumped in the back seat. The older one (5 or 6) jumped up front. By the time I made it to the house, the older one had caught back up to me yelling the car is moving. He had disengaged the parking brake which sent the car on a slow roll towards trees, a steel trailer, and my garage. I hopped in just in time to get the door closed before it hit a tree and apply the brakes before anything else happened.

So - the first time my son 'drove' the car alone was a little hard on me - I think when they become of age they are more then welcome to take the wheel with me in the car - but it's not for borrowing......

Well My son is 18 and he has no interest in driving the Malibu.

He says the gas pushes too hard and he doesn't like to shift gears.

My daughter will turn 16 in October so there is still hope yet.:D

I doubt you would even drive it in this life time Andy. :p

Sorry you left yourself wide open on that one and I had to take it. :D

Well I don't consider what I do as borrowing. It's more I put the gas in it and I am able to drive it around. Ok it probably is borrowing but I won't complain. :D

I let my oldest son race my 71 when he was 18.
I wasn't so nervous that he'd wreck the car or hurt himself as I was that he'd get hit in the pits by a kid on a moped/ATV.
Anyway his very first pass went well & the car went it's quickest, 12.72. I had a small scare at the end of the track (steep downhill shut down) when he stopped but didn't turn off right away. He told me later he couldn't turn because something was jammed between the spokes of the steering wheel!
He earned the privilege to race the car by doing well in school, working part time & showing a serious interest in maintaining both the Chevelle & his own truck.
I never let him drive it on the street without me. Just too many Mustangs wanting to joust.

:noway: no no no :noway:
My 28 year old son was raised on automatics he has a thing about clutches. He has a big problem  with feel of clutch contact and gas pedal mashing as needed thing. ????? Two masters degrees in college working on a third.
My 24 year old daughter is the same way. I still can not figure out how she passed her drivers test. She did not go to college. She is now some kind of department head /supervisor in a WalMart in Fla.

And the poor Drivers Ed instructor that had her in High School bless his heart, taught her to drive. HE IS a far better person than myself.

Must have been the daddy thing?

Well i am sort of a dilemma myself. Do i let my 16 year old kid drive my cars or get him a yugo? He is wanting me to build him one of the stable mates for him. Our recent purchase is a 69 SS camaro. He loves that thing. However i do think its cool to see a kid drive a classic to school instead of the trendy rice burner.

That was my biggest dream was to start building cars with my kids help. Two boys ( 18 and 15 ).. Built a 40x60 shop, buying what tools I can afford when I can, and getting stuff for the velle. Always had hope to build a drag car so they could see what its like to race down the track. I know from my own experience it was one of the funniest things I did was racing my brothers 70 Nova down the Ohio Valley Raceway.. But as these days of yewt's go, they are lazy as heck, and don't ever lift a finger to help with anything!!!!!!!

So the way I look at it is this.... If they put some blood, sweat, and tears into the ride, they have EARNED the right to take it for a spin every now and again. If not HECK NO!!!! My kids are going to get a 3 minute ride in the Chevelle when its done since that is how much time they have put into it!!

My 19 year old daughter loves to drive my 95 Z28 Convertible with the 6 speed, and would love to drive my Chevelle but it aint going to happen. I've seen her drive, she thinks revving to 5000rpm before shifting is normal driving:noway:.

That is what I tell my kids too.. The 18yo is getting ready to finish high school this year with NO plans of going to college:sad:... However, he is working with a buddy of ours as an apprentice doing electrical work (making $15 an hour) getting great grades now, so I can't complain to much... Just want to work on stuff together like my dad and I did back in the day...

How are things up in KY anyways??? Born and raised to good ole' Louisville

I would say that the most I've done in the Chevelle is a little way past half throttle. Just past the point of when the secondary's are starting to open up. When I do that I usually shift at around 4500-5000. I've even told my dad when I do that. I even showed him the video I made of one of the times.

I put the camera in the back seat, reached back, hit the button on the camera to record, and then took off. All he really said about it was that it sounded good. :D
