Talked to harold yesterday and we were talking about 2 of his cams for my 327 vette.

Either the 401A3LUN which is the LT-1 Replacement cam, or the 401A4LUN which is his circle track cam.

THe motor is currently a 327-365 in a vette with the LT-1 cam (someone removed the 30-30) I'm running 2 1/2 ramshorn manifolds, factory aluminum intake, 4 speed and 3.73 gears.

I want the most performance and keep it close to sounding like the 30-30.

what do you guys think?

Scroll down to the "Factory Muscle" section on the attached link to see what Comp has to offer. Harold's cams probably run better, but these may give a more nostalgic sound and feel.

I should think that the A4 OR A6 will give you the bumpity bump of the LT-1 cam with a HECKUVA lot more midrange snot, esp in a 327. The A6 should only need 10:1, the A4 might want a freckle more. These cams will give the 327 more pull in the 3000-4000 range than that LT1 cam ever will, yet still allow you to reach up and shift at 7000+. THe LT1, at least the 2nd gen grind I ran, was much akin to an L88 cam. Nothing doing until it's well into the 4500 range, ( in a 358c.i.) and I don't care to make my mills above 7500 anymore.

427L88,
how do you like the perf of an L88 cam in a 427?

just curious, becasue i was thinking about a 383 with the offroad cam to get a similiar feel,

just curious.

Thanks

I don't frankly. Not enough bottom end for a heavy Chevelle, and again, I don't like to push the old rat to 7500 anymore. These modern grinds like the one I use or the Comp 280S ( both smallish circle track cams) will let you go just as fast, I think, with a more modest gear. Those LT1?88 cams needs a tremendous amount of gear to ET well. 4.56 minumim.

My opinion, and my experience with both GM cams is from years ago as a 17-18 kid working in a machine shop., so... fwiw....

Ended up with an LS6 type cam in the L88, and it was OK, but almost too mellow. The A6 I run now, is almost as rumpity as the L88 was ( and would certainly have been if done on a 106-108 lsa), yet comes screaming on right around 3K.

Personally think those old long duration, wide lsa cams are most suitied to road racing in light cars, not drag racing in an A-body, unless 4.88s are your gig. OR, if you're trying to control an 11:1-12:1 motor on 93 octane. They do that well.
