: What Cam For 307?
SSuper Dave Oct 25th, 03, 11:00 PM I am going to freshen up a 307 that I have to take the place of the original one in my '68. I will be using stock heads with a new valve job and a stock bottom end. The intake will be a stock 327 4bbl piece witha Q-Jet and 2.25 in dual exhaust coming off of stock manifolds. Right now its a Powerglide with 3.08 gears, but could soon have a 700R4. Can someone spec a cam that will run well but not be too big for daily use and the stock parts? Thanks!
UDHarold Oct 25th, 03, 11:52 PM The SB254/262H12, 199/207 at .050, .401/.432 valve lift, 112 LSA, and 106 int CL, idles good with lots of vacuum, and adds about 35 BHP to a stock 307.
The SB262/266H10, 207/211 at .050, .4322/..441 valve lift, 110 LSA, and 104 int CL, has a lopier idle, but a much stronger mid-range and top-end.
Both cams are daily drivers, and should deliver good mileage on the hiway.

UDHarold Harold, what kind of torque gain would dave get from this cam? I would think with a full wight 68 and small cid (307) Torque would be more of a concern than HP?? BTW Harold, glad to see your back into grinding again. I will be calling you (hopefully) in January to see about a good hydraulic roller for my 388. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Dave,
Im running a crane 266 in my 307-stock heads-edelbrock performer intake and carb-1 5/8 headers. cam is very close to the second grind Harold listed. If I had to do it again I would have went with something a little smaller. My coupe is a driver and hardly ever sees 4000 rpm. I believe the The SB254/262H12, 199/207 at .050, .401/.432 valve lift, 112 LSA, and 106 int CL would be perfect in a daily driver with a 307 if you dont plan on turning past 4k.JMHO.
Pat Kelley Oct 26th, 03, 1:41 AM The 199/207 @ .050 cam should be very torquey. I run one of the generic 204/214 cams in a 350 and it makes excellent torque. I suspect the 199 cam would act about the same in a 307.
Wheels68 Oct 26th, 03, 10:26 AM I'm running a small solid in my 307. Specs are 224/224 @ .050" and 260\260 @ .022". Lift is .420" so its easy on the valvetrain. Its ground on a 110 lobe center and I have it at 106 deg intake CL. I think Harold makes one like this. Some thing to consider if you don't mind running to a solid. Also, Scoggin Dickey has a good price on the Federal Mogul solid lifters. I just got a set for $52 from them.
UDHarold Oct 26th, 03, 1:58 PM The last time I kput a SB254/262H12 in a 305 P/U, the driver called up and told me he had gained 2 MPG and "about 2 seconds in the quarter!...". It(the SB254/262H12) also won the SCCA stock class National Championship 2 years in a row, Morrison-Cook IROC-Z. They told me the 35 BHP figure for a stock engine, and 55 BHP for a blue-printed one.....
A 307 should gain at least the 35 BHP, and the torque gain is from idle...
