Time to put new headers on.

Ones I am looking at are either "Hooker comp" 2" with 3 1/2" collectors, or "Hedman" 2" with 3" collectors.

These will be going in a 72 with a 454. Any fit problems I should know about. I am going from 1 3/4" with 3" collectors now.

Thanks

I put the hookers on my 72 wagon with BBC, Passenger side went in fine from bottom. Drivers side had to be jacked a little, and I had to move my proportioning vlv and ding one of the tubes to clear the mounting point on the lower control arm. Other than that I had no probs. Just had to take the one in/out a couple of times.

Why are you going to 2" tubes? 1.75" tubes will get your low 12 second time slip or high 11 second time slip, or even a mid low 10 second time slip tongue.gif I think that you'll find the larger tube headers will also drag the ground more often, I used to run Hookers 2"x3.5" on my car,the lower tubes were getting smashed graemlins/thumbsup.gif but my car may sit a little lower in front than yours.

Shawn, ditto what Robert said. With your cam and rpm range, BlackJack( Dynomax), or SUMMIT 1.75"/3" pipes are defintely a better match. The Summitts are $80 USD but some needing to be painted or coated. Dynos are coated for $220 I beleive.

Shaun, ditto to Bob and Gene's statement..you don't want or need a 2" primary tube header

thanks guys smile.gif .

Guess I have to re think this

The reason for going bigger was that I have put bigger valves in this winter and cleaned the heads of the cast flashing and polished the exhaust ports. So I thought doing that I would need bigger tubes. Guess I'm wrong :( .

Better to find out now than after buying the wrong ones so thanks again graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Shaun, the 2" primaries will push the peak header torque on a 454 to somewhere around 4500, that's only 1000 less than your redline and well above converter stall.

This must be one of those times "Big is not better" ;)

For sure Shaun. When I swapped the pos small tubes for the 2" Hookers, immediately noticed it took more throttle to come off a stop. Of course, on the other end, above 5000, and particularly from just below 6000 on up, it roared. But with 3.31s and a Muncie, not a good exchange. Of course, with a 5 speed, or the equivalent of 4.33s, 5000 comes up so fast it doesnt really matter anymore. And the car is ET'ing a lot lower than the 'small is better' crowd predicted.

Its all about the interaction of the components.

Plus you just saved not only ET, but $$$. 2" coated Hookers are EXPENSIVE. Of course, daddy told me never to waste money on cheap Hooekrs anyhow. ;)
