: Dog Toys
ChevyGirl66 Feb 23rd, 08, 2:26 PM I know many of you have dogs...
any ideas for good dog toys...ones that will last with hard persistent chompers?
i bought lacey some day before yesterday...and they're at the point where you're supposed to take them away...
the ropes are in shreds and the stuffing is coming out, the other toy was a rubber one, it now has holes and small pieces missing....
anyways...any ideas?
she's almost 6 months now
thanks,
Rosie
sabres07 Feb 23rd, 08, 2:31 PM A toy called a "kong" is very good. They make all different sizes and shapes but the general prmise is that they are tough rubber (ball, or other shape) with a string. The green, oblonged shaped one with the thick green rope is the best. Most pet supply stores have them.
Our little terrier likes a cloth stuffed toy shaped like a tiny human with a squeaker inside. He likes to chomp on it and squeak the squeaker and shake it like he's tearing it up. Then uses it as a pillow too. He also has a stuffed squirrel toy he treats the same way. He likes it but HATES the real thing.
Pete 67 Feb 23rd, 08, 2:52 PM What kind of dog is Lacey?
I agree with Von, as I have a pug who likes the ones with the squeakers. He has had a few "hedgehogs" who kinda grunt instead of squeak. He likes to chew them & rip the stuffing out til he gets the squeaker. Once he has his mission accomplished, he likes to chew the plastic & then its game over. :)
ChevyGirl66 Feb 23rd, 08, 3:02 PM haha...
lacey is a german shepherd mix...she does like the squeaker toys, but, boy does it get annoying at times...once she finds it, she wont let it go. squeak..squeak..squeak...squeak...squeak, lol
OutCast Feb 23rd, 08, 3:07 PM My dog's favorites are my wife's entire shoe collection...
Don_Lightfoot Feb 23rd, 08, 3:09 PM Anything with ropes sure doesn't last long with my Black Lab. My wife keeps buying them, then the threads are all over the floor and she then YELLS AT ME
The most indestructible item I've come across for my mutt is one of those hard rubber tires, unfortunately he doesn't play with it much. He just loves a good sized bone made of real hard plastic (I think). He will just lay on the floor and chomp on that thing continuously.
ChevyGirl66 Feb 23rd, 08, 3:13 PM yea....we have strings all over our living room, haha
my sister was telling me about those rubber tires...may look those up
ive gotten her the 'nylabones', but those don't last long either, and im not keen on getting her raw-hide bones
Gazzer Feb 23rd, 08, 3:14 PM I second the Kong toy. Also, get her a Nylabone (sp?) they are a hard nylon and are very good at keeping their teeth clean !

Bowtie-72 Feb 23rd, 08, 5:08 PM My dad has a similar problem, his dog "buddy" is a Chow/PitBull/Shepard/Husky mix. He eats the real bones like candy, so I got him one of those monster truck tires on a rope. He hasn't eaten through it yet, but I think the smell slows him down-heavy rubber smell to it. He also likes smaller tree trunks from what we've seen.
DOUG G Feb 23rd, 08, 5:19 PM I third the Kong toy.

Thick, natural rubber to provide your dog with a real chewing workout. Red toy is one tough toy - and a black toy is even tougher. Kong's revolutionary 'beehive' design makes it bounce unpredictably in every direction. Your dog will love his Kong Toy as-is, or as a special treat, you can stuff the hollow end with kibble, treats or peanut butter. He'll go crazy!! Water Kong comes with an attached throw rope.
Kong's exclusive red natural rubber is puncture resistant, super bouncy, and chewer friendly. It is unmatched for resilience, durability, and bounce. Kong satisfies a dog's natural need to chew and also cleans teeth and conditions gums. The thick, flexible walls keep springing back for more! Kong rubber is non-toxic, nonabrasive, non-splintering, and does not get sharp when chewed. Kong toys are enthusiastically used and recommended by veterinarians, trainers, dog professionals and satisfied customers world wide.

Chevello Feb 23rd, 08, 5:29 PM We have the Kong for our Mini Dachshund, he chews every other toy to shreds. THe longest lasting besides the Kong was a bone shaped squeaker toy that was made from some kind of heavy nylon cloth. THe cloth was similar to what you would find on a rooftop carrier for a car or something.
The Kings are great. Couple of spoonfuls of peanut butter and he's busy for an hour.

-SS454- Feb 23rd, 08, 5:33 PM haha its so funny to watch a dog go at it with peanut butter. I buy the big jars of PB and when id get to the end, id give it to my dog and he'd have a field day biting and licking that thing. Aside from the big holes and torn off pieces, the jar was spotless after.
Sedanman Feb 23rd, 08, 5:35 PM I'd recommend the Kong as well. It's the only thing my dogs haven't chewed up yet. Plus you can put a treat inside of it and keep them busy for a while.
68start Feb 23rd, 08, 6:42 PM We resorted to golf balls for our 100lb lab. They can be bought very cheap at garage sales. Some brands last longer then others however. Some only last about 10 min. My personal favorite are the golf balls with the rubber bands in the center. As he gets to the center, the small bands snap and his facial expressions get me rolling. Might be cruel, but fun to watch.

68KMENO Feb 24th, 08, 8:47 AM if you have a big dog the ONLY thing I've found that works is Nylonabone
my Rot's love em & they last about 2 months ...... these are the BIG ones with a knot in both ends I buy them from WWW.drsfostersmith.com they sell them without the fancy packaging for half the price of the pet club stores ;)
Shevelle Feb 24th, 08, 9:05 AM My 155# German Shepherd would be lost without his "treat ball". I buy it here: http://www.busydogball.com/. It is a little pricey, but it is the ONLY one that he can't destroy. The ones at Petsmart, etc last him about a day until they are in pieces. It is a clear hard plastic ball (they have different sizes but he has the biggest) that you can put treats such as small milkbones in. He spends a LOT of time rolling the ball around trying to get treats, barking at it, pawing at it. He is a mostly outdoor dog and it holds up to the abuse and weather. It does make quite a bit of noise though. I've tried all the treat dispensers like kongs and they do not hold his interest, unless I'm there to play with it with him. This ball he plays with all by himself and seriously, he would be heartbroken if it were gone.
1badss396 Feb 24th, 08, 9:36 AM The best ball for labs and Jack Russel terriers is a racket ball:yes: its the only ball they have not chewed up or poked a hole in it yet in my house.
68start Feb 24th, 08, 11:19 AM Besides the golf balls, I forgot the absolutly LONGEST lasting favorite ball he loves.
A bowling ball. He spends LOTS of time pushing it around the yard. He works VERY hard to position his teeth just right in the holes and can carry it around. Neighbor gave it to me. The live on a pond and use to throw it in the pond for there last dog. YES it floats.

BULKSS Feb 24th, 08, 12:43 PM I would also agree with the Kong . My Dog has one she has for a couple of years.
ak 67SD Feb 24th, 08, 3:48 PM we've used kong brand toys, they are quite indestructable... we use peanut butter and other treats in the traditional kong... i've heard of others freezing food in them too, i havent tried that yet...
