: Problems starting..

On Saturday my bride and I took the old red girl out for a little ride (for you northern guys it was sunny and 65*). On Sunday I went to crank the Chevelle and nothing. The engine turned over and over, the carb was getting fuel, but she would not start. Checked all the connections to my HEI, all seem normal. Is it possible that the coil in the HEI went bad overnight? Anyone got any thoughts?

I feel you pain. I'm in Chicago on business right now, but I fired my car up Sunday afternoon, it ran for about 30 seconds, and then nothing. Will crank but not start. I had time to do a little troubleshooting, and I think it might be the MSD box. If you're not running MSD, it could be your ignition switch or the module in the HEI. Can you see if you're getting 12 volts to the HEI when you turn the switch on?

Hello Mike,
HAve fun in the windy city. Make someone take to to the Chicago Chop House and to Gino's East for dinner!! I did check with my Multimeter and I am getting 12 volts to the BAtt plug. The only thing I can think of would be the coil or the module. I have changed a coil before but never a module. Is there any trick?
I was hoping to get everything in good order to go racing this weekend.

Module will take you about 5 minutes to replace unscrew unplug.Put the coating they give you in a small tube on the bottom of new module, install same way you took it out, you'll be set to go! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Sounds like a module going bad to me. I usually try to have a spare one with me just in case.

By the was USAFTL, where will you be racing?? Commerce?

I am planning to go to Commerce. I think Billscamino and probably Kjett and maybe Georgia69 are going as well.

I hope you get it straightened out. I've been looking forward to hearing your E.T.'s after reading your excellent dyno results. I like the combo. smile.gif

Carrying a spare module is definitely one of the best pieces of advice I've received in the past.

Thanks Rod,
Yesterday I bought the MSD "Ultimate HEI Kit" that includes a new rotor, new cap, dust shield, new coil and a new module. While I was there I bought MSD's "Man Made Lightning" extra module.

Regards, I'll be there. Planning to get my car dialed in for the points race which starts the following weekend (March 6th). I'll be testing out a new set of merge collectors and a Wilson tapered spacer. Hoping to get a 10.5's pass with good air/starting line.

Steve,

I hope you get your ignition problems sorted out. Like others I've been anxious to see your car run. Even if you don't get it running come out and watch. I'll bring you a stogie smile.gif

One way or another I will be there. I am going through fast car withdrawals. The definition of time moving slowly is waiting 3 months for the track to re-open so you can run a car you have been building for 2 years. I look forward to seeing all you guys Saturday.

OK, back from the Windy City. Too busy to eat a big steak while I was there, but got to stay in the Hyatt on the 29th floor, great view of the lake. I will have to pass this weekend, but plan to make the points race on March 6. Assuming I get my electrical problem worked out, that is smile.gif

No, didn't run into Oprah...did ride the EL from downtown to O'Hare though, it was about equally as frightening as the cab ride from the airport into town...

We usually try to do one Braves/Cubs game at Wrigley every year.
One of the "highlights" of the trip is the CTA ride from O'Hare to Addison Ave.
