Can cam bearings be replaced with the rods, pistons etc. in the block. Here is what happened I have a 66 396 and when I started it I did not have any oil flow to rear cam bearing. Not sure why the hole was plugged I had correct bearing with groove and groove in cam. Anyways after removing the cam and rear plug I ran a wire and compressed air through hole. Reprimed engine and now I have oil flow. But I wanted to replace the cam bearings when I took it to the machine shop they said that you could not put the bearings in and line up oil holes with the engine assembled. Cam intake and rear plug are out. Is this true ? Thank You:confused:

I have replaced the rear or front cam bearing with the rotating assy in place but not the others. If you are careful, it is not too bad. Experience helps!!!

you can do it, it's just hard.

most likely the problem you had was that the bearing was clocked wrong. there's no groove in the block, the bearing must be installed exactly right so the holes in it line up with the holes in the block, otherwise, no oil to the top end.

It actually might be easier but not cheaper to tear it down.
