How far beneath the rear seat pan is the gas tank. I put my new carpet in today and I think the rear seat will help hold it in place, but I am thinking of putting a couple of screws (1/2 inch long) with large washers at the very rear of the carpet to hold it in place. Will I be too close to the tank??

Jon the gas tank is located under the trunk,in back of the rear end. You should not have any problems, putting screws there. The gas tank is located between the rear end and the rear bumper.
Screws really aren't needed. Just let it run 6 inches or so to the rear of the lip and the seat will hold it down.

Screws shouldn't be necessary (unless you've trimmed your carpet incorrectly or purchased from a poor source.).
