Just had to share with you guys. Went to the local 1/8th mile for the first time in about a year and a half. Had run mid 10's with the 283, dropped a full second with the crate motor(9.63@about70mph) and had never run with the 355 before it blew up and had not wanted to run the 357 until I had some gears or some sort of other parts to do away with my mismatched combo.

Anyway, the crate motor runs were done on 15" rallyes, street tires, empty trunk, no passengers etc, simple 1200 dollar crate, performer 600 holley headers. 9.63@70ish

Tonight, a friend of mine bet me that my car would run somewhere in the high 8's "as it sits." I said low 9's.

Here's the combo for tonight:
trunk full of a/c parts, old waterpump etc.
Buddy riding passenger(about 160 lbs, so I didnt short shift or stomp the brakes or anything to win the bet)
Annnd, since Im in school, my moms been cruising it to work, crockpot in the back seat floor a stuffed bear and a baby present on the backseat.

On 17's 35 series tires

3.36 pegleg

stock converter

No carb dialing cept by ear and smell and about 30 degrees total timing. (cruising mpg wise(r) setup)

And, my overcammed mismatched motor combo from my post last week.
Here are the times:

R/T .983 (Left at about 2,000rpms and yes I just waited for the green, knew the other lane would smoke me, so I didnt even try)
60' 2.117(thanks to the tires, gears, converter and sagged, torched, stock rear springs)
330 6.066
1/8 9.172
MPH 79.48

Not too bad all considered. Only made that one pass for bets purposes.

On a side note, I was racing a 4 speed 65 chevelle, here are his times:

R/T .499
60' 1.439
330 4.332
1/8 6.765
mph 101.12

Guess I should make a pt outta this post. About what time do you think my car ran? mid to high 14's? How about the 4 speed 65?
I think with weight reduction(aka remove all the daily driver stuff, crock pot, friend in shotgun etc) timing, carb dialing, it would quicken up quite a bit. Then of course converter to match the cam and gears would be tremendous! Anyway, had to share. smile.gif

just based on the 1/8th mile e.t.s they convert to:

9.17 1/8th =14.40 1/4 mile
6.76 1/8th =10.62 1/4 mile

on your car if you would get the gearing corrected and a good 60 ft time with a help of the stall.........you should be able to run a 13.86 e.t. at 94.6 mph with a 8.83 @ 79.44 1/8th mile time.

right now your 1/8th mile mph of 79.48 is good for a 8.83 e.t. so your laying .35 hundreds on the table because of your gears and lack of stall and traction.

and just based of your 1/8th mph of 79.48 and guessing your race weight of 3700 lbs you are putting down approx. 274 hp to the rear tires.

your car has more mph for the 1/8th mile time it is running.......this is telling me your car has high gears.......hence the 3.36 gears........and lack of low end effeciency to get the car moving...........with out any changes to your car you would see like 14.10-20's or so at 98 mph give or take.

now with the 65 car his 1/8th mile mph is low at 101.12 , with a 6.76 1/8th mile e.t. he should be turning 103.70 mph.......this is telling me he is "hooking very well" and more then likely has some steep low gears (just for 1/8th mile runs).......and really pushing the limit on the rpms.....even thou his 1/8th mile e.t. translate to a 10.62 e.t.@ 128.39 mph i would be hard pressed he could gain 27.27 mph from the last 1/8th mile. so with out changing gears he will be running in the high 10's

most cars gain 20 to 25 mph in the last 1/8th mile

never the less if his 65 weights about 3700 lbs he is putting about 600 hp to the ground. if it weights less then that......then the hp number goes down.....

of course this is all guess work........based on your 1/8th mile.

you'll never know for sure unitl you really run a 1/4 mile.......

I think you are probably capable of about 14.4 @ 96-97 MPH. Pretty good for a 350 with no gears.

Wow! This one came back from the dead!

Still havent run it since all of this, but I have done quite a few changes since. Also I have all sorts of new parts (Coan converter, gears etc) that need to go in still. Money is good, but working 60+ hours a week have left no time for wrenching :(
